The Marin County Sheriff's Department reports that a multi-agency search and rescue effort in a heavily forested area of the Muir Woods National Monument concluded Saturday morning with the safe return of four adults and a 5-year-old child.
Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue Coordinator Michael St. John said that National Park Police received a cell phone call at 7:30 p.m. Friday from a woman who said that she and several other people had become lost while hiking in Muir Woods.
The call was cut off, however, and authorities were unable to re-establish contact with the woman.
At about 8:30 p.m. the missing party's vehicle was found in the Muir Woods parking lot off of Muir Woods Road and at 9 p.m. a search was initiated.
According to St. John, two all-terrain vehicles and five canine teams were deployed to assist 25 Marin County ground searchers and personnel from the Muir Beach Volunteer Fire Department, the Mill Valley Fire Department, the Marin County Fire Department, the Sheriff's Department and the National Park Service.
The search party set out into the densely wooded trail network and located the cold but unhurt hikers at about 11:30 p.m.
St. John said that the four missing hikers were walking back to the trailhead under their own power.<
