Shoppers leave Lucky grocery store in Millbrae Monday.
After serving the community for decades, Millbrae’s Lucky grocery store will permanently close its doors Friday, Nov. 3.
The store located at 45 Murchison Drive has served the community since the ‘60s, albeit under various names.
City Manager Tom Williams said the city changed the property’s zoning for high-density housing and commercial mixed-use as part of its general plan update. The building height could reach around 85 feet. With density bonuses for affordable housing, it could be as tall as 125 feet, he said.
“We would love to work with the property owner to redevelop the site with high-density residential mixed use, one of the few sites in the city that is highly suited for high-density housing, and it is walking distance to transit, it’s ideal,” Williams said.
Mayor Ann Schneider said it was a market when she was young, adding the loss of Lucky grocery store is a sign of the times for the supermarket industry.
“We hope that we can bring in a new supermarket,” Schneider said. “So, one door closes and new opportunities.”
Millbrae resident Judith Sullivan was walking back to her car with her groceries, Friday Sept. 25.
“We have been shopping here since the 1960s, and it’s been the best store conveniencewise, so this is really terrible,” Sullivan said.
According to a statement from Save Mart Companies, Lucky’s parent company, the employees can transfer to neighboring stores. The statement didn’t say why the store is closing.
One customer leaving the store Friday said she noticed a person walking through the aisles and appeared to be stealing. The customer said she mentioned it to the clerk, who told her theft was one of the reasons the store was closing, although that detail is unconfirmed.
