Employees and patrons of a pancake restaurant in Belmont were ordered to shelter-in-place for two hours last night as hazardous materials crews examined a bag of chemicals in the parking lot.
A manager of the International House of Pancakes at 510 El Camino Real found the bag as he was coming in to work just before 5:30 p.m., according to Doug Fry, a battalion chief with the South County Fire Authority.
The grocery bag was filled with seven or eight different chemicals that ranged from basic acids to more alkaline materials, Fry said.
Occupants of the restaurant were ordered to shelter-in-place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. while a chemist conducted tests. The chemist determined the chemicals were likely hobby-related supplies, Fry said.
The chemicals are being disposed of, and no one was injured as a result of the incident, Fry said.
Investigators have not yet determined who the bag belonged to or how it came to be in the parking lot, Fry said.
