Megan Grant powered UCLA to the NCAA Super Regionals in grand fashion.
Megan Grant
The recently crowned NCAA softball single-season home run queen became the first player in Division I history to reach the 40 home run plateau Sunday in UCLA’s 15-1 mercy-rule win over University of South Carolina in the Los Angeles Regional finale. With the Bruins leading 2-0 in the fifth, Grant stepped to the plate with nowhere to put the dangerous left-handed slugger, and she teed off on an outside fastball to send an opposite-field shot deep into the twilight at Easton Stadium.
Grant was one of four Bruins to homer in the game. Rylie Slimp got UCLA on the board with a two-run homer in the third. After the Grant slam, Kaniya Bragg and Soo-Jin Berry each homered amid a nine-run sixth.
Battling for the national home run lead — and the NCAA home run record — with University of Oklahoma freshman Kendall Wells, Grant now leads the race by three. Wells last homered Friday in the opening game of the Norman Regional, her 37th of the year. Oklahoma advanced to the Super Regional with Sunday’s 8-1 win over Michigan.
UCLA will now host University of Central Florida starting Friday in the best-of-three Super Regional for the right to advance to the Women’s College World Series.
