Serra had its five-game baseball winning streak snapped, getting blanked 2-0 by Sacred Heart Cathedral (1-1 WCAL, 4-4 overall) Friday at West Sunset Diamond in San Francisco. It is the first shutout loss of the season for the Padres, who split the two-game season series with the Fightin’ Irish.
Right-hander Jacob Vines earned the win, firing six shutout innings of two-hit baseball, walking three and hitting one batter while striking out nine. The senior has had the Friday magic for the Irish for the last two years. Last season, he led SHC to two shutout victories in the second game of a West Catholic Athletic League series, including a no-hitter April 4, 2025, in a 4-0 win over Riordan.
Nate Hui, Ayden Beal and Cooper Hipps tallied one hit apiece for Serra (1-1, 8-2).
Vines also went 2 for 3 with an RBI at the plate, as SHC scratched out single runs in the first and second. Serra sophomore Rocco Zirelli took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits through three innings of work. Freshman left-hander Michael Ohman worked three scoreless frames of relief, allowing one hit while striking out five. Ohman has now gone 15 innings through seven varsity appearances without allowing a run.
The win for SHC snaps a five-game losing streak against Serra in head-to-head play dating back to 2024.
