Three San Mateo County tennis teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section team tournament last Friday, while three others were sent home.
Yuanye Ma
Top-seeded and defending CCS champion Menlo School stayed undefeated on the season, improving to 22-0 after a 6-1 win over Carlmont. Menlo’s No. 1 singles player, Yuanye Ma handed Carlmont’s Lucas Rowe his first loss of the season as Ma won in straight sets. He needed to win a first-set tiebreak, 7-1, to win the first set and he maintained that momentum in the second, winning the match 7-6, 6-3.
The Knights faced No. 8 Los Gatos in a quarterfinal match Monday. The Wildcats advanced with a 5-2 win over St. Ignatius.
Sixth-seeded Sacred Heart Prep (15-8) eliminated Burlingame in the second round, 5-2. The Gators traveled to San Jose Monday for a quarterfinal match against West Bay Athletic League rival and third-seeded Harker (15-4) at Del Mar High School in San Jose.
The season came to an end for Aragon (16-7) with a 7-0 loss to No. 5 Homestead (14-7). But the match was closer than the final score indicated as three of the matches went to super tiebreaks, with the Mustangs winning all three.
Serra (12-5), which made its first CCS team tournament since 2014, is the only non-seeded team to advance to the final eight, as the Padres knocked off No. 7 Palo Alto (17-6), 4-3. The Padres faced No. 2 Saratoga in a quarterfinal match Monday.
