Mico DeMartini and Caroline Gherini combined on a five-hit shutout as Hillsborough played its most relaxed game of the tournament to advance through the elimination bracket against Redwood City at District Field. Hillsborough’s two previous games were both one-run outcomes, opening with a 4-3 loss to Pacifica and bouncing back with a 3-2 win over Palo Alto.
Hillsborough scored all six runs in the first, sending 11 batters to the plate in the inning, including the first six batters reaching base. Dylan Viera got his team on the board with an RBI single; Brady Lien drew a bases-loading walk; Mason Dow produced an RBI infield single; Bryant Lien doubled home two runs; and with two outs, Savan Singhal reached on an error to score Dow.
DeMartini then cruised through 4 2/3 innings to earn the win, allowing four hits with nothing wild while striking out four. The right-hander threw 52 pitches, 40 for strikes. Gherini then closed it out with 1 1/3 innings of work, allowing one hit, and throwing just 10 pitches.
Hillsborough advances through the elimination bracket, and will play Friday at 3 p.m. against the loser of Thursday’s game between Menlo-Atherton and San Mateo National.

Alpine led wire to wire, scoring three runs in the top of the first and then holding off Belmont-Redwood Shores in an elimination game at District Field.
Tommy Brock got Alpine on the board with and RBI double, and Gavin Arditi followed with a two-run single. BRS answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double from Austin Law-Hing and an RBI knock by Mason Jen. Alpine starting pitcher Connor Murphy settled down from there, though, working three innings to notch the win before handing it over to Nixon Strick, who tossed three innings to record the save.
Alpine added a run in the fourth when Ryan Cohen scored on an error. BRS made it 4-3 in the fifth with Jameson Biddle reaching on a dropped third strike, with Joshua Lo racing home from third. But Alpine got the run back in the sixth on an Arditi RBI single to plate Brandon Pyle.
Brock paced all hitters, going 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Arditi added two hits and three RBIs.
Biddle, Jen and Djaven Blanks pitched for BRS.
With the win, Alpine advances through the elimination bracket, and will play Friday at 5:30 p.m. against the loser of Thursday’s matchup between Pacifica and San Mateo American.
