Editor,

I loved the feature story on the Belmont pub St. James Gate (Aug. 21). I felt the need to add that “The Gate” has also been a launching pad for several local high school musicians, many with connections to owner Doug Motern’s alma mater Serra High School. The Gate remains one of the only establishments where under-21 bands can get experience playing live on stage in front of an audience. Bands like Billy the Kid, who were winning local Battle-of-the-Band contests while still in middle school, Exit 11 who are still rockin’, and various groups fronted by Alex Jordan, now a prominent recording and tribute artist out of Nashville. All of these Serra alums got their start at The Gate and Mr. Motern deserves a shout out for giving them a place to begin their musical journeys.
