A recent letter writer’s disparaging remarks about the Labor Day protesters and misleading remarks about their messaging were disturbing. The people who sacrificed their time that hot summer day were hard working accomplished citizens protesting the danger the current regime poses to our Democracy and basic civility in our society.
The Labor Day signs called out the cuts to energy and construction programs that employed tens of thousands of hard-working Americans, tariffs that are the largest tax increase on American citizens in generations, tax cuts for billionaires while cutting Medicaid, SNAP, low-income housing and energy assistance; the Children’s Health Insurance Program, education assistance for disadvantaged students, NIH research for early childhood diseases as well as other programs serving low- and middle-income Americans.
With approval ratings tanking across the country, Trump is pushing red states to rig/gerrymander elections so Democrats cannot win (a situation Democrats must answer in kind).
Signs also protested the cruel treatment of hard-working immigrants. He is not going after the worst of the worst as he promised. ICE is going after day care and senior care workers, fruit pickers and crop harvesters, who have been seeking citizenship for decades. ICE goes to churches and courts where these immigrants have been showing up for appointments and paying taxes with no representation, doing tough jobs that Americans don’t want.
These protesters should be applauded, not mocked.

Thanks for your letter, Ms. Pinkston. I believe you may have included every Democrat talking point regarding the folks loitering in the streets under the guise of making a difference and California being a threat to democracy in their supposed belief of our (yes, our) great President Trump and Republicans being a threat to democracy. Unfortunately, conflating legal residents and invaders to our country as the same are not helping your cause. Being supported by money from billionaires doesn’t help your cause.
But please, continue marching for what you believe in, even if misinformed. Keep it peaceful and many of us will applaud you for that. The mocking will continue because the vast majority of us can’t understand why Dems would rather support criminals and terrorists over American citizens. BTW, for the amount of money you feel is being taken away from government programs, why don’t you and like-minded folks (such as the alleged thousands of protesters) pony up and write checks to the federal government. I’m sure other folks would wholeheartedly applaud and not mock you for that. In fact, it may encourage others to do the same.
