Joseph F. Geyer, 90, died Saturday, Oct. 25 at his family home in San Bruno.
Geyer was born on Easter Sunday, March 31, 1918 to Joseph and Annie Geyer. He attended San Bruno Elementary School, San Mateo High School and graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in engineering.
A typical country boy, he hunted ducks and quail in what is now Crystal Springs Reservoir. In high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped build the county park at Coyote Point.
After college, he joined the U.S. Navy as a member of the newly-formed SeaBees Construction Battalion. He was stationed in the Philippines during World War II where he followed Marines into battle zones to clear land, build runways and do construction.
He met his wife Helen in Maine and they were married three months later.
After the Navy, he was an engineer for Pacific Gas and Electric and Bechtel Corporation.
After retirement, he joined the Golden Gate Anglers’ Club and took up fly fishing.
He is survived by John and Julie Geyer (son and daughter-in-law), Ann Geyer and Bill Pankey (daughter and son-in-law), Jim and Anika Geyer (son and daughter-in-law), Jean Geyer (daughter), grandchildren Jonathan Geyer, Christine Geyer, Maria Geyer and her son Ben, Anika and Tim Craig, Katrina Seagrave, Andrew Seagrave and Adam and Rosie Seagrave.
A memorial mass will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 at St. Paul of the Shipwreck in San Francisco followed by a memorial for friends and family at the Anglers’ Club, McClaren Lodge in San Golden Gate Park.
