The Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting Friday, March 28, to consider a proposal to provide BART $10,321,678 to install 82 state-of-the-art fare gates at five stations located in San Mateo County.
The proposed work is part of a $90 million systemwide replacement of BART’s existing and aging fare gates. Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco and Santa Clara County transportation authorities have contributed their county funding shares, according to the county.
The San Mateo County Transit Agency is responsible for overseeing and allocating funds for transportation projects in San Mateo County. BART plans to apply for a grant from the SMCTA’s Measure W Regional Transit Connection Program to cover the cost of the project at the Colma, Daly City, Millbrae, San Bruno and South San Francisco stations, but won’t learn until mid to late summer 2025 if the grant will be received. However, BART must give notice by March 31 to its contractor whether the San Mateo County stations will be included in the project.
The board on Friday will consider providing BART the needed funds should it not receive the grant, according to the county.
