A multi-agency organized retail theft task force with the Daly City, San Bruno and San Mateo police departments have arrested 88 and recovered 719 items valued at $23,521 since it was formed in October in response to rising rates of such crimes, according to a press release from the San Mateo Police Department.
There were also 82 crimes, two weapons seized and two combative suspects, according to police.
The task force worked in collaboration with the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office and was formed to fight against organized retail theft through a grant awarded by the Board of State Community Corrections. A deputy district attorney has been assigned to the task force to facilitate prosecutions. Since its inception, dozens of law enforcement officers from the participating departments have been deployed to target activities across the three cities, which all have large malls. Officers worked in plain clothes and in uniform, according to police.
The task force observed faster law enforcement response times and a heightened awareness of shopping center operations, map layouts and standard operating procedures among officers, according to police.
“This coordinated investment into combating organized retail theft has resulted in an immediate and impactful return. The collaboration among the three police agencies and our partners in the private sector has proven to be extremely effective,” said San Mateo Police Chief Ed Barberini, “We are grateful for the support that made this endeavor possible, and I look forward to a sustained, cohesive approach to addressing a significant crime trend that touches all communities within the region and state.”
It’s great to see the “law” side of “law and order” doing their job. This is a good start but will it only be good for headlines and nothing else? Before concluding this operation is successful I’ll wait for reports on the “order” side that show scofflaws facing consequences for their actions. Otherwise, this is just a revolving door and these scofflaws will again be busy amassing another stash of stolen goods.
