The former Burlingame school principal arrested for driving while intoxicated, speeding and driving without a valid license pleaded no contest yesterday to a lesser "wet and reckless" charge after prosecutors agreed to drop the other allegations.
Shawn Michelle Rohan, 44, will be sentenced March 8 to time in the Sheriff's Work Program, two years probation, a first offender's program and a host of standard fees for driving while intoxicated, according to court records clerks.
Rohan resigned as principal of McKinley Elementary School shortly after being arrested March 13 in Half Moon Bay. Police reportedly pulled Rohan over for weaving and speeding in traffic on Highway 1 near Capistrano Road. Two separate tests pinned her blood alcohol level at .09, just over the legal California limit of .08.
Rohan initially pleaded not guilty to all misdemeanor charges and was scheduled to begin trial Monday. Instead, she agreed to change her plea to no contest. In return, three other misdemeanor charges of driving with a suspended license and speeding were dismissed.
Rohan joined the Burlingame Elementary School District in 2003 as a replacement for former Principal Noelle Engemann Furrer. Furrer also resigned for alcohol-related reasons; she was charged with providing alcohol to minors at a party held at her home. Furrer ultimately pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of minors.
