Jury selection began yesterday in the attempted murder trial of two San Mateo men accused of pulling two brothers from a car and brutally beating them with fists and wooden stakes.
Jared Fonua, 19, and Leonard Johnson, 22, have pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, inflicting great bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon stemming from the June 13 brawl. A third man, Beau Mapa, 20, remains at large.
The three men reportedly participated in a mid-afternoon fight with tree stakes on the 200 block of North Eldorado Street in San Mateo. The victims were driving home and honked the car horn at the defendants and others congregating in front of the driveway. Fonua, Johnson and Mapa allegedly pulled the men from the car and beat them unconsciousness with their hands three-foot wooden stakes pulled from the ground, according to prosecutors. One victim had his check slashed to the bone and suffered bleeding in his brain.
In February 2004, Fonua was arrested on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and using a firearm in the commission of a crime. Prosecutors believe Fonua also participated in a shooting that left a man paralyzed from a bullet to the back but a jury ultimately acquitted.
Fonua and Johnson remain in custody on no-bail status.
