I recently had the opportunity to sit down for coffee with Dana Yates Sahae, a candidate running for San Mateo City Council, and I walked away genuinely impressed. In a local election season that can often feel routine, Dana stood out as someone who both understands our city and cares deeply about how it is governed.
Her background as a journalist gives her an uncommon strength in public service: She listens carefully, asks the right questions, and seeks clarity before forming conclusions. At a time when communication between City Hall and residents can feel opaque or inconsistent, Dana’s commitment to open, transparent dialogue is refreshing. She doesn’t rely on slogans or broad promises; she talks about process, data and accountability — the kinds of things that actually shape outcomes.
The San Mateo Daily Journal’s Feb. 12 brief of her candidate announcement captured some of these qualities, but meeting her in person made them even more evident. Dana has a grounded understanding of San Mateo’s challenges — housing, infrastructure, city services — and she approaches them thoughtfully rather than ideologically. Even more important, she has a clear respect for residents’ lived experience and a willingness to bring more voices into civic decision-making.
I believe Dana Yates Sahae would bring tremendous value to the council. Her insight, professionalism and commitment to strong communication are exactly what San Mateo needs at this moment. I encourage my fellow residents to learn more about her and consider supporting her candidacy.
