A mental health crisis can look different for anyone. But shifts in behavior and mood, feelings of hopelessness, changes in sleep and withdrawing from activities they used to enjoy can be a signal that someone is struggling. Tips and resources can be found on the websites of organizations including the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the American Psychiatric Association. You can also call, text or chat with 988 to get guidance on how to start a conversation.

The nonprofit Trevor Project received a $45 million gift from billionaire MacKenzie Scott at the end of 2025. The organization is known for running a hotline for LGBTQ+ youth. The gift announced Monday comes after the Trump administration stopped providing specific support for gay, trans and gender nonconforming young people who called the 988 National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The Trevor Project was one of the nonprofits that staffed that option and lost $25 million in funding. Scott's fortune largely comes from from her ex-husband Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. She gave away more than $7 billion in 2025.
