Strong winds and waves from Hurricane Erin have battered Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard as dangerous rip currents continue to threaten from the Carolinas to New England. But the storm is heading farther out to sea and forecasters say the unusually large hurricane will slowly weaken into the weekend. It has already dropped to Category 1 status. The menacing waves closed beaches from the Carolinas to New York City on Thursday. On North Carolina's Outer Banks, waves breached dunes in the town of Kill Devil Hills, and water and sand pooled on Highway 12. But the low-lying islands appear to have dodged widespread destruction.

With salmon fishing barred off the California coast for two years, fishermen have been running historic boat tours, party cruises, and scattering the ashes of the deceased to try to stay afloat. Now, sport and commercial fishing fleets are gearing up for what could be a third consecutive year of salmon closures in the Golden State due to dwindling stocks. Salmon fishermen say the closures are endangering not only the fish but their livelihoods and stem from years of drought and state and federal water policies. The Trump administration has been pushing to send less water through some California waterways to aid farmers in a move that salmon fishermen say could further worsen their lot.
A Spanish research vessel that investigates marine ecosystems has been abruptly diverted from its usual task to help in the increasingly desperate search for the missing from Spain's floods. The 24 crew members aboard the Ramón Margalef were preparing Friday to use its sensors and submersible robot to map a huge offshore area to see if they can locate vehicles that last week's catastrophic floods swept into the Mediterranean Sea. The hope is that a map of sunken vehicles could lead to the recovery of bodies. Nearly a hundred people have been officially declared missing. The boat will join a wider effort by police and soldiers who have expanded their searches for bodies beyond the devastated towns and streets.
In the gateway to the Arctic, fat and sea ice are crucial, intertwined and dwindling. And scientists say because of that polar bears are in trouble. In Churchill, Canada, the polar bear capital of the world, scientists say there are now about half the polar bears as there were 40 years ago. Polar bears are losing sea ice that they use as a base for seal hunting, so they are going hungry longer in the summer. Even tiny plankton, the base of the food web, is going low fat. And that's bad for the region because fat is crucial for survival here.
