There’s a sound that you hear in the background of a lot of American mornings, not long after people open their eyes.

It’s the low gurgling and hissing noise that a drip coffee machine makes while it’s doing its thing on the kitchen counter. On the weekdays, that can start when it’s still dark outside, the smell wafting through the air before the first alarm even goes off. On the weekends, it just happens more slowly, the machine making a larger batch while people come and go from the kitchen throughout the morning. It barely requires you any attention, in fact. But it’s reliable and probably the top-performing day-to-day appliance that most American homes have in them.
