As our loved ones get older, chances are they will face challenges when it comes to maintaining their independence. One specifically sensitive moment when an older one may need help is toileting. Older adults frequently suffer incontinence, have balance issues, and less flexibility, which can, in turn, make toileting more challenging.
Supporting a loved one deal with toileting issues requires empathy, a lot of respect, and a well thought out approach. Your unwavering support can greatly affect their comfort, dignity and well being. For that very reason, we decided to give you some practical tips to provide meaningful help when providing toileting assistance.
Keep in Mind the Different Toileting Challenges
There can be various reasons for having toileting challenges - the most common ones include aging, certain medical conditions, injuries, or disabilities.
Limited mobility: Having a hard time moving to and from the bathroom.
Incontinence: Having problems controlling bladder or bowel movements.
Cognitive impairments: Certain conditions like dementia may lead to confusion or difficulty recognizing they need to use the bathroom.
Post-surgery recovery: Temporary mobility or strength limitations may also pose toileting challenges.
Transitioning from hospital to home often presents unique challenges, and addressing toileting needs early on can significantly ease this process for both caregivers and their loved ones.
The first step to offering effective support is recognizing the root of the problem. Make sure to openly communicate with your loved one to understand their needs and concerns and allow them to express their feelings.
Our Tips for Supporting Toileting Needs
1. Evaluate Mobility & Accessibility
Take a look at the bathrooms in your loved one’s home and see if you can spot any obstacles that may hinder their mobility. For instance, pay close attention to uneven floors or rugs that could pose a tripping hazard. Your safest bet is to install grab bars in the bathroom, add non-slip mats, and raised toilet seats to improve the overall safety.
Furthermore, make sure the path to the bathroom is well illuminated and clear to minimize the risk of accidents, especially at night. Stock the bathroom with all the needed supplies and make sure everything is within reach.
2. Pick the Right Pieces of Equipment
Recommended for you
Investing in the proper toileting equipment can greatly improve the experience for your loved one. Go with bedside commodes, toilet seat risers as well as safety frames to offer extra support.
These pieces can be especially helpful if your loved one has a hard time maintaining balance or reaching. If your loved one is also dealing with incontinence, you will also need to stock up on adult diapers and disposable bed covers.
3. Have a Routine
Setting up a toileting routine can be helpful for both you and your loved one. Make sure to schedule regular bathroom breaks, particularly after meals, to reduce the likelihood of toileting accidents. Having a routine will help your loved one feel like they have more control and will help them feel more comfortable.
4. Set Up a Smooth Toileting Process
If you want to help your loved one get to the bathroom, it’s best to stand at their side to support them in case they trip. When walking, move at their pace and do not rush them. After you get in the bathroom, make sure they take small steps and turn around slowly so that the toilet is directly behind them.
Then, if needed, help your loved one pull down their clothes and help them to slowly lower themselves onto the seat. If you want to support them more, put your hands on their torso and bend your knees as they are getting lower on the toilet seat. Once they’re ready, lift them up safely. Keep in mind to never lift them outright so you don’t risk a dangerous fall for both of you.
When it comes to wiping, it’s easiest to do so when your loved one is standing up or leaning over. Always wipe front to back until they are clean. If needed, use wet wipes after a bowel movement. Then, help your loved one put their clothes back on and help them get to the sink to wash their hands.
5. Make Hygiene a Priority
Good hygiene is essential to keep your loved one healthy and comfortable. Always help them wash their hands after toileting, use warm water to keep it soothing and gentle on the skin. Help with cleansing as needed, using soft wipes or washcloths for added comfort.
Be sure to properly dispose of soiled items to maintain a clean environment. Besides promoting physical health, these practices will help your loved one feel fresh, dignified, and cared for.
