California is beginning 2025 with a solid start to the winter snowpack, but more storms are needed to keep the state's water supplies on track. Officials at Phillips Station said the water content of the snowpack measured 91% of the average on Thursday. Andy Reising is manager of the snow surveys and water supply forecasting unit for the Department of Water Resources. He says the northern part of the state has gotten storms but the south has been dry. He says more storms are needed.
Firefighters have made progress against a California wildfire that triggered extensive evacuation orders, but damage assessments have raised the number of destroyed structures to 25 and forecasters say heat and fire risk are expanding on the West Coast. Containment of the Thompson Fire near the Butte County city of Oroville rose Friday to 46%. The fire grew little overnight and remains at just under 6 square miles. Most evacuation orders were lifted Thursday. A new blaze dubbed the French Fire erupted Thursday evening and triggered evacuations in the small town of Mariposa along a highway leading to Yosemite National Park. But winds calmed and crews were able to build a containment line along the entire eastern side of the community.
Rain and snow is falling across Southern California while the northern half of the state has turned windy and frosty in the aftermath of the weather system. The California Highway Patrol escorted Interstate 5 traffic over Tejon Pass north Los Angeles early Monday due to snow. Chains are required for travel on several other Southern California mountain routes. The low-pressure system moved through Northern California on Sunday, leaving blustery and cold conditions in its wake. Across the state line, temperatures dipped below zero across parts of northern Nevada early Monday and Reno forecasters warn that lows Monday night into Tuesday could be the coldest some locations have seen in five to 10 years.
Researchers at the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab said they detected 8.5 inches of new snow in the 24 hours between Saturday and Sunday morning.
