In a rare bipartisan effort for a deeply divided Congress, the Senate has passed a broad bill to make U.S. housing more accessible and affordable. The bill passed on Thursday would reduce regulations, regulate corporate investors and expand how housing dollars can be used to build affordable homes and rentals. It now heads back to the House, which passed a separate version earlier this year. It is unclear whether President Donald Trump would sign it after declaring last weekend that he won't sign any new measures unless Congress passes legislation that would require voters to show proof of citizenship.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom says there's no imminent threat to the state from Iran. ABC News says the FBI warned California that Iran had aspired to send drones to the West Coast in retaliation for war. The FBI later released text of the alert, which noted that the information was based on "unverified information." The White House now says, "No such threat from Iran to our homeland exists." Newsom says California and various agencies plan for worst-case scenarios. Police in Los Angeles and San Francisco say they are monitoring world events for any risks.

A late-hour attempt by California's top Democratic official to thin out the party's crowded field for governor flopped, leaving Democrats anxious over the possibility about a Republican upset in November. Outgoing Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has acknowledged fears inside the party that multiple Democratic candidates could undercut each other in the June 2 primary election, opening a pathway for a Republican to seize the top job in one of the nation's most solidly Democratic states. California Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks urged lagging candidates to exit the race before the Friday deadline to formally enter the contest, but none of the established Democrats dropped out.
From former presidents to an NBA Hall of Famer to prominent church pastors, stories of the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr.'s influence on politics, corporate boardrooms and picket lines loomed large at a celebration honoring the late civil rights leader. Thousands of people gathered Friday at a church on Chicago's South Side to pay a final public tribute to Jackson. Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden were in attendance. The ceremony honors Jackson, a protege of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and two-time presidential candidate. It follows memorial services that drew large crowds in Chicago and South Carolina, where Jackson was born.
The White House has insisted that President Donald Trump was visiting Georgia to promote the economy. But in the opening minutes of his first stop at a local restaurant, the president raised the prospect of voter fraud without evidence and talked up his plan to require voters to show identification before casting ballots. He was visiting the congressional district previously represented by Marjorie Taylor Greene, a former supporter who resigned in January after feuding with Trump. The White House has long said Trump would focus more on the economy, but recent months have been dominated by other issues, including deportation efforts in Minneapolis, military action in Iran, and his false claims about the 2020 election.
How many Democrats are too many? In the race for California governor, so many Democratic candidates have crowded into the contest that party insiders have become fearful of a historic calamity in the making. It's become mathematically possible that Democrats divide their vote so much that only two Republicans advance from the June primary to a November runoff. Democratic candidate and former U.S. Rep. Katie Porter's campaign is warning "there's a very real chance there could be only Republicans on November's ballot." A twin victory for GOP primary candidates remains a long shot. A Republican candidate hasn't won a statewide election in California in two decades.
