The local FOUR CHAPLAINS CEREMONY commemorates the bravery, heroism and sacrifice of the four chaplains during the 1943 sinking of the U.S.A.T. Dorchester when 672 sailors lost their lives. As the ship was damaged by torpedo and most of the 902 men were topside, the chaplains opened a storage locker and began distributing life jackets. When there were no more life jackets in the storage room, the chaplains removed theirs and gave them to four frightened young men.  As the ship went down, survivors in nearby rafts could see the four chaplains--arms linked and braced against the slanting deck. Their voices could be heard offering prayers. The January 31 Ceremony is an annual remembrance of the chaplains' selfless acts of courage and faith.
