Former President Barack Obama has expressed support for California Governor Gavin Newsom's approach to redistricting. Obama spoke at a fundraiser on Martha's Vineyard, emphasizing the need for Democrats to respond effectively to Republican-led redistricting efforts, particularly in Texas. He praised Newsom's plan as responsible and temporary, contingent on Republican states' actions. The event raised $2 million for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. Texas lawmakers have been debating a new congressional map that could create five new GOP seats. Democratic governors are considering similar strategies to strengthen their party's position in Congress.

Leaders in San Francisco are blasting the Trump administration for stripping the name of gay icon Harvey Milk from a U.S. naval ship. Milk is a revered figure in San Francisco history. He was a city supervisor who was fatally shot along with Mayor George Moscone in 1978 by disgruntled former supervisor Dan White. Just last month, California marked what would have been Milk's 95th birthday with proclamations heralding his kindness and calls for unity. Milk's close friend Cleve Jones called the move an attempt by the Republican administration to distract the public from more serious issues.

Obama had it right when he started looking into government bloat. He also had it right when he said cancel culture had gone too far.

The House has voted to censure Al Green, a Democratic congressman from Texas, for disrupting President Donald Trump's address to Congress earlier in the week. Green offered no regrets when he explained his actions on the House floor and said he'd do it again. The resolution against Green was approved in a mostly party-line vote of 224-198 on Thursday. Green was joined in the well of the House by more than 20 fellow Democrats as Speaker Mike Johnson read the resolution. Green and some of his colleagues began singing "We Shall Overcome" as Johnson spoke. Republicans yelled "order" as the singing continued. Eventually, Johnson declared the House in recess.

Some Democrats are declining to attend President Donald Trump's address to Congress. Rep. Gerry Connolly is from Virginia, a state hit hard by the Republican president's federal employee firings. Connolly says he's never missed a speech but the challenges demand "more than sitting in a chamber" Tuesday night listening as if Trump is not "unleashing chaos and cruelty" on people's lives. Many Democratic lawmakers plan to wear blue and yellow ties and scarves to show support for Ukraine. Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas wore a blue and yellow tie Tuesday and accused Trump and Vice President JD Vance of "bullying" Ukraine's leader. The White House says Trump's theme is "renewal of the American dream."
