Electric vehicle owners don't buy gas. States look for other ways to pay for roads and bridges.

States with aggressive climate goals like Oregon are facing a conundrum. Electric vehicles can help reduce emissions in the transportation sector, the nation's largest source of greenhouse gas emissions; but they also mean less gas tax revenue in government coffers. Revenues from gas taxes paid by drivers at the pump are projected to decrease as more people adopt electric and fuel-efficient cars. That's forcing officials nationwide to look for new ways to fund transportation infrastructure. According to the National Association of Budget Officers, motor fuel taxes are the largest source of transportation revenue for states. But the money they bring in has fallen.

Majority of Democrats think Kamala Harris would make a good president, AP-NORC poll shows

As President Joe Biden faces a growing drumbeat of pressure to drop his reelection bid, most Democrats think his vice president would make a good president herself. The new poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that about 6 in 10 Democrats believe Kamala Harris would do a good job in the top slot. About 2 in 10 Democrats don't believe she would, and another 2 in 10 say they don't know enough to say. Since Biden's massive debate debacle on June 27, many Democrats have privately and even openly looked to Harris to step in and succeed Biden as the party's presidential nominee.

Biden vows to keep running as signs point to rapidly eroding support for him on Capitol Hill

President Joe Biden is vowing to keep running for reelection as he rejects pressure from within his Democratic Party to withdraw after a disastrous debate performance raised questions about his readiness. But in an ominous sign, one of his top allies publicly suggested on Wednesday a way that the party might choose someone else. According to a campaign aides, Biden told his staff that "no one is pushing me out" of the race. But there are signs that support for Biden is rapidly eroding among Democrats on Capitol Hill. Rep. Jim Clyburn, a longtime Biden ally, says he'd support a "mini-primary" in the run-up to the Democratic National Convention next month if Biden were to leave the race.
