President Joe Biden says in defending his new tariffs on Chinese products that China's government subsidies ensure its companies don't have to turn a profit, giving them an unfair advantage in global trade. The Democratic president on Tuesday slapped tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, advanced batteries, solar cells, steel, aluminum and medical equipment — taking potshots at presidential rival Donald Trump along the way as he embraced a strategy that's increasing friction between the world's two largest economies. The Chinese foreign ministry lashed out at the announcement. The tariffs come during a heated campaign between Democrat Biden and Republican predecessor Trump, both of them trying to show who's tougher on China.
The Florida Highway Patrol says a bus carrying farmworkers in central Florida has overturned, killing eight people and injuring another 40 passengers. Authorities say the bus was transporting 53 farmworkers early Tuesday morning when it collided with a truck and swerved off a road in Marion County, north of Orlando. The bus crashed through a fence and ended up on its side in a field. The workers were being transported to Cannon Farms in Dunellon, which has been harvesting watermelons. Cannon Farms describes itself as a family owned commercial farming operation that has farmed its land for more than 100 years.
In the coming days, the U.S. military in the eastern Mediterranean is expected to jab one end of a hulking metal dock into a beach in northern Gaza. And that may be the end of the easy part for the Biden administration's $320 million effort to open a sea route to get humanitarian aid into Gaza. Relief groups point to dangers and uncertainties ahead for aid delivery teams as fighting surges. They say Israel hasn't improved the humanitarian access and safety promised after an Israeli attack killed a team with World Central Kitchen. The Israeli prime minister's office says it had enabled the entrance of thousands of aid trucks into Gaza and would continue to do so.
The daily struggle to find work for Chinese immigrants living illegally in a borough of New York is a far cry from the picture Donald Trump and other Republicans have sought to paint. The former president has repeatedly suggested that Chinese migrants are a coordinated group of "military-age" men who have come to the United States to build an "army." Immigrants who talked to The Associated Press said they came to the U.S. to escape poverty in China or the threat of persecution in their repressive home country. Asian advocacy organizations say they're concerned the exaggerated rhetoric could fuel further harassment against Asians in the U.S.
Charred homes and cars dot the hilltop West Bank village of Duma, a searing reminder of Palestinians' vulnerability to rising violence from Israeli settlers. The head of village council says the wreckage is the aftermath of an attack in mid-April that left 15 homes damaged by arson and six residents injured by bullets. He says Duma lacks the power to defend itself. The U.N. says there have been nearly 800 settler attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since the war in Gaza began. The attack in Duma occurred after a 14-year-old Israeli who went missing was found dead. Authorities arrested a man from Duma they say was connected to the boy's alleged murder.

California could soon deploy generative artificial intelligence tools to help reduce traffic jams, make roads safer and provide tax guidance, among other things. The state has announced the new agreements Thursday with five companies. They are parts of Gov. Gavin Newsom's efforts to harness the power of new technologies for public services. The companies now enter a six-month internal trial where the state will test the tools before it can decide whether to launch the tools. Generative AI is a powerful technology that could help improve governmental works, but it needs safeguards and oversight. All the tools are considered low risk, meaning they don't interact with confidential data or personal information.
The Biden administration plans to partially end the 27-year-old court supervision of how the federal government cares for child migrants, shortly after producing its own list of safeguards against mistreatment. Opposing attorney Leecia Welch says the Justice Department has said it will ask a federal judge to terminate what is known as the Flores agreement at the U.S. Health and Human Services Department. The move could strain President Joe Biden's already rocky relationship with immigration advocates as he confronts an unprecedented surge in border crossings, with arrests topping 2 million in each of the last two budget years.
US says Rafah offensive would jeopardize cease-fire talks as Biden threatens to halt more Israel aid
The U.S. is warning that Israel will be dealing a strategic victory to Hamas if it carries through with plans for an all-out assault on Rafah. The city is the last major militant stronghold in Gaza. The warning was backed by a fresh threat from President Joe Biden. He says he will pause more offensive military assistance to Israel if it goes through with the operation in a city where more than 1 million civilians are sheltering. The U.S. is making its sharpest moves yet to influence the decision-making of its ally in the ongoing war on the militant group triggered by Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
