The criminal complaint against Solomon Peña, a 39-year-old felon and self-proclaimed "MAGA king," describes how his anger over his landslide defeat in November led to attacks at the homes of four Democratic lawmakers in New Mexico's largest city. A SWAT team arrested him Monday evening after serving search warrants at his home, police said. Peña, whose criminal past came up during last year's campaign, repeatedly made baseless claims that the election was "rigged" against him.
U.S. border authorities have updated their policy for pursuing smugglers and those suspected of other crimes following an extensive review. Customs and Border Protection announced the policy changes Wednesday, just days after back-to-back crashes in southern New Mexico, including one that followed the shooting of a Border Patrol officer and another that turned deadly. The agency said the updated directive provides a framework for weighing the risks of a pursuit against the law enforcement benefit or need. In crafting the changes, the agency said it reviewed more than two dozen vehicle pursuit policies from various enforcement agencies across the U.S.
Brazil's capital is bracing for the possibility of more violent demonstrations by people seeking to overturn the presidential election. Local security officials are blocking access to buildings trashed on Sunday by rioters. A flyer promoting a "mega-protest to retake power" circulated on social media platforms urging protesters to turn out Wednesday in two dozen cities, including the capital. It is unclear how large or violent such demonstrations might shape up to be, but skittish authorities are taking no chances. The federal appointee who has assumed control of the capital's security says police are shutting down the main avenue to traffic and limiting pedestrian access with barricades. They will block all access to the square that was the site of Sunday's mayhem.
The operation to detain Ovidio Guzman, the son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, unleashed firefights that turned the northern city of Culiacan into a war zone, authorities said Friday. In a blow-by-blow description of the Thursday battles that killed 10 military personnel and 19 suspected members of the Sinaloa drug cartel, Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval said cartel gunmen opened fire on troops with .50-caliber machine guns. The army responded by calling in Blackhawk helicopter gunships to attack a convoy of 25 cartel vehicles, including truck-mounted cartel gun platforms.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his armed forces to hold a 36-hour unilateral cease-fire in Ukraine this weekend for the Orthodox Christmas holiday. Kyiv indicated it won't follow suit. Putin did not appear to make his cease-fire order conditional on a Ukrainian acceptance. It wasn't clear whether hostilities would actually halt. Ukrainian officials have previously dismissed Russian peace moves as playing for time to regroup their forces. At various points in the war that started Feb. 24, Putin has ordered limited and local truces to allow evacuations of civilians or other humanitarian purposes. Thursday's order was the first time Putin directed his troops to cease fire throughout Ukraine.
