The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office is investigating the cause of death of a woman who was found down on a street in Belmont Monday morning.
The woman has yet to be identified, but Belmont police Capt. Patrick Halleran said she was in her 60s with long brown hair and was carrying a plastic bag when a passing motorist found her at about 7 a.m. at the intersection of Cipriani Boulevard and Newlands Avenue. The victim appeared to suffer mostly head injuries, he added.
Halleran said the woman lived in the area, and she would routinely take morning walks and collect bottles and cans to recycle.
At this point, the police department hasn’t ruled anything out as to cause of death, but it appears unlikely that she was assaulted or struck by a car because of her injuries and because the condition of her clothing is not consistent with being struck by a car, Halleran said.
If she fell, it’s unclear that she tripped or fell because of a medical event or some other reason, he added.

“We’re trying to keep an open mind and gather facts and piece it together,” Halleran said. “I’m sure we’ll figure it out. The big piece of this will be getting the autopsy from the coroner.”
Police are still analyzing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, but so far no one who might’ve seen what happened to the woman has come forward. The witnesses who have come forward only saw the victim before and after she was found.
Halleran said there were no sidewalks where the woman was found and the shoulder of the road was uneven there.
