Plans submitted for a 23,000-square-foot Tesla sales and service center may change the look of the Whipple Avenue and Veterans Boulevard intersection just west of Highway 101.
Slated for 515 Veterans Blvd., where a Crunch Fitness gym and the Chef Peking restaurant currently stand, the lot where the electric car maker is looking to build a repair garage, warehouse and a sales office is last in a row of auto dealers with locations just west of Highway 101.
With the garage expected to occupy 15,000 square feet and the sales office just under 4,000 square feet, the new location is expected to feature a 57-spot parking lot and at least one Tesla supercharger, according to project plans.
Whether the station would be publicly accessible to drivers would be among the questions addressed in the application process, said Assistant City Manager Aaron Aknin. He confirmed the plans have been deemed incomplete while the developer includes additional details in plan drawings, and would come before the Planning Commission in the coming months once the application is complete.
As the plans move forward, a zoning amendment to allow car sales and service at the same location will also be considered for the site, said city spokeswoman Meghan Horrigan.

Though a representative of Colliers International, the property owner, could not be reached to confirm details about gym and restaurant’s current lease, Aknin said management of Crunch Fitness has indicated a desire to stay in Redwood City regardless of the changes to the site.
Emails to Tesla representatives were not returned.
