Sam Manu and Donoven Robinson, Aragon boys’ basketball. Aragon rallied for a critical 58-49 win at San Mateo, which puts the Dons in the upper tier of the PAL South Division standings in sole possession of fourth place. Manu and Robinson led a transition attack in the second half that saw Aragon overcome a seven-point halftime deficit by outscoring San Mateo 20-12 in the third quarter. Robinson scored a game-high 17 points, adding four steals three assists. Manu added 15 points, including the showiest play of the night with a fast-break, windmill layup in the fourth quarter which finished as he crashed to the floor to an explosion of applause.
Menlo-Atherton girls’ wrestling. A program-record six Lady Bears advanced to the championship round at the Central Coast Section girls’ wrestling championships Saturday at Overfelt High School. Four of them came away with gold: sophomore Anna Smith (116s); junior Lauren McDonnell (137s); junior Abby Ericson (170s); and Daily Journal Athlete of the Week Folashade Akinola (189s). Two took silver: junior Evelyn Calhoun (121s) and junior Angie Bautista (126s). And senior Livienna Lie also earned a podium spot with sixth place in 235s.
Grace Florendo and Zoe Zaharias, Sacred Heart Prep girls’ basketball. Florendo, a freshman, and Zaharias, a junior, both scored nine points to lead the Gators’ to a 39-34 win over rival Menlo School. It is SHP’s first win over Menlo in at least four years.
Joe Foley and Cole Kastner, Menlo School boys’ basketball. The Knights’ present and future were on display during their 55-40 win over rival SHP. Foley, a senior, did a little bit of everything, finishing with 17 points, four assists and three rebounds. Kastner, a sophomore, scored a game-high 18 points as the Knights moved closer to clinching the WBAL title. Foley proved at the top of his game all week, leading Menlo to three overall wins. The senior point guard scored a season-high 28 points not just once but twice, notching the total in a WBAL win over Eastside College Prep and again in a non-league victory over University-SF.
Alex Arouxet-Jara and Leilani Jara, South City girls’ soccer. Last season, the Lady Warriors set a program record with 13 overall wins and eight league wins. With a 1-0 victory over Capuchino last week, South City matched both those records. It didn’t come easy though. Playing in choppy weather at Capuchino, the Warriors had trouble communicating with their passes throughout the first half. Alex Arouxet-Jara, though, exacted a strategy by scoring the game’s lone goal from the 18-meter line with a low bullet 10 minutes into the second half. Her cousin Leilani Jara then helped preserve the win in the closing minutes with a clutch defensive play. With Cap advancing past South City’s goalkeeper and looking at a potential game-tying breakaway, the sophomore sprinted over to defend the dramatic sequence by clearing the ball off the foot of the attacker. Through the Warriors’ past 10 games, they have posted a 9-0-1 record, marking the best 10-game stretch in program history, according to South City head coach Salvador Navarro.

Antonio Vega, Half Moon Bay boys’ soccer. The senior striker did not score in the Cougars’ 3-1 win over Capuchino, but his speed resulted in a pair of HMB goals. In the first half, he ran onto a through pass and was knocked down in the penalty box for a Cougars’ penalty kick, which Christian Martinez converted. Then minutes into the second half, Vega again pulled away from a Capuchino defender, forcing him to foul Vega just outside the box. The Cougars converted the ensuing free kick, with Saul Villafuerte scoring after a scramble in the penalty box. That win, coupled with a 1-0 win over Jefferson, gives the Cougars a perfect 9-0 record in PAL Ocean Division play.
David Billington, Half Moon Bay boys’ basketball. The Cougars, with two wins last week, remain deadlocked with Jefferson atop the PAL North Division standings. Half Moon Bay capped the week with a 92-41 win over South City, marking the highest single-game point total for the Cougars since the 2007-08 season. Billington was a marksman from beyond the arc, drilling six 3-pointers to rack up a game-high 22 points.
Bianca Baldini, Notre Dame-Belmont girls’ soccer. A senior who started the season as the Tigers’ starting goalkeeper, Baldini has become the team’s leading goal scorer since the start of WBAL play. In a 3-0 win over Menlo, Baldini scored her 11th league goal in seven games. The win broke a tie for the top spot in the WBAL Foothill Division standings.
Haley Dyer, Terra Nova girls’ soccer. The Tigers earned two big wins last week, both against teams that had been ahead of them in the PAL Bay Division standings. With the top three finishers in league earning automatic berths to the CCS playoffs, Terra Nova is now tied for third place with the Burlingame Panthers, who the Tigers beat 3-0 earlier in the week. They followed that with a momentous 1-0 win over second-place Menlo-Atherton, and Dyer provided the lone goal when she pounded in a header on a corner kick with an assist from Shaylah Youngdale. A junior defender, Dyer now has two goals on the year. And Terra Nova is rolling, posting a 3-0-1 record over its past four games.
Victoria Borrego and Marlene Salinas, Terra Nova girls’ wrestling. The Tigers took fourth place in the team element of the CCS girls’ wrestling championships. And Borrego and Salinas led the way. The two seniors each came away with gold, as Borrego earned a 5-0 decision in 106s to repeat as CCS champion. Salinas soldiered through a shoulder injury that nearly forced her to bow out midway through the match, but she held on for a 2-1 win in 150s.
