Editor,
Elections are upon us, and we need climate champions. How do you know if a candidate will fight for good climate policies? Some candidates will say anything to get elected, so how can you tell who is sincere?

Look at their websites. If a candidate only talks about climate adaptation — like water, sea-level rise, fire protection — they aren’t taking climate seriously. These are important but not enough. A true climate champion prioritizes reducing our use of dirty energy and transitioning to renewable sources.
Why is this important? We can’t just adapt our way out of this crisis. We need proactive measures to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability.
You might think, “I am just one person. How can I make a difference?” But doing nothing follows the oil and gas industry’s playbook. It’s exactly what they want. If we don’t vote for climate champions and contact our elected officials to demand climate action, we won’t see the change we need. If you don’t know how, join a group like Citizens Climate Lobby that trains and makes it easy to get involved.
The biggest political donor in California is oil and gas. But politicians need more than money — they need votes, and your vote matters. By supporting candidates truly committed to real climate solutions, your voice and your vote can drive the change necessary for a sustainable future. Make your vote count.

Thanks Ms. Salinger. Excellent reminder. We need to choose our politicians wisely if today's young people are to have a good future.
Ms. Salinger, thanks for your letter but perhaps a better indicator of whether a candidate should receive your vote is whether they walk the walk instead of just talking the talk. For instance, do candidates that talk about climate change do anything to reduce their carbon footprint? After all, there are plenty of folks that talk but don’t act. To wit during the last COP climate conference, around 100,000 people attended the conference, with 400+ private jets burning fossil fuels to make the trip and who knows how many public jets making the trip. If they’re not worried, why should we? All things being equal, I’d vote for someone who talks about climate adaptation rather than someone who only talks about climate change but doesn’t do anything to make a difference.
BTW, I’m still wondering what the Citizens Climate Lobby is doing to walk the walk in reducing carbon emissions. I hear plenty of talk but nothing in terms of physically reducing carbon emissions. If the Citizens Climate Lobby doesn’t do anything to reduce their carbon emissions, why should we. As it is now, if the CCL endorses a candidate, I’ll vote for someone else…
Ms. Salinger - let's face it, most politicians are fakes in terms of climate change. Most, if not all, use it to advance their political careers. Sorry to burst your bubble. The CCL has just made many of our youngsters anxious for no discernable reason. But they, and several bored adults, are the target.
