There’s no affordable housing crisis. It’s a myth. The Bay Area has an affordable cost of living crisis. The existing power structure would have you believe that construction of new housing, the construction of which is to be subsidized by government, with the purpose of providing housing units at low rents, the difference to market rates in rents to be subsidized by government in perpetuity, will help alleviate the crisis. So, to relieve the higher cost of living the accepted solution is to subsidize low-cost housing, or steeply raising taxes to pay for subsidies this new housing demands.
Can I see a raise of hands as to what steeply raising taxes will do to the cost of living?
In addition, workers who work in the Bay Area, in Burlingame, don’t actually live in Burlingame. The rents are too high. Building 100 low-rent units in Burlingame to meet the demand for $10,000 workers who already live outside of Burlingame, then causing market rate rents to increase to pay for the increase in taxes needed to subsidize the construction then subsidize the low rents for those 100 units (these are concrete figures), doesn’t solve any problem. If you get to live in one of those 100 units you have clout in city government. There still will be 10,000 workers who will live in Colma and commute into Burlingame.
Obviously an immediate freeze in all affordable housing projects and legislation is necessary. And then a subsequent bullet-proof ban on those projects and legislation. What will we actually get to see? More Democrats elected and more affordable housing that is funded and then never gets built, mired in regulation and delays.
