Editor,

The Supreme Court just legalized partisan gerrymandering. Living in the relatively liberal Bay Area, this may not seem like a pressing issue to us. However, giving politicians the ability to redraw and redistrict as they please in order to finesse an election out of us fundamentally undercuts our democracy.

In 2018, four states passed citizen ballot measures to end gerrymandering. This shows a growing movement to make sure that we create district lines, not manipulative lawmakers.

We the people must take gerrymandering reform into our own hands. We can pass reforms that create independent commissions to draw lines for 2021, and we need our legislators to move on that immediately. In the Bay, we can pave the way.

California has an independent commission which draws the lines and has been a guideline for other states, so your wish has long been granted.
