Based on the same electric vehicle platform as the Volkswagen ID.4 and sized similarly to the Q5 compact SUV, the new 2022 Audi Q4 E-tron and sportier-looking Q4 Sportback E-tron will go on sale by the end of 2021. Audi says the base price will be less than $45,000 before applying federal income tax credits and any state rebates or local incentives. The destination charge will cost extra.

Audi plans two Q4 E-tron configurations. The Q4 40 E-tron has a single 150-kilowatt (201-horsepower) permanently excited synchronous electric motor powering the rear wheels, with a predicted driving range of about 250 miles.

The Q4 50 E-tron Quattro models come with two motors, adding an asynchronous motor at the front axle that activates only when additional traction and acceleration are needed. Both motors combined produce 220 kW (295 hp). Audi has not released the anticipated driving range for this model.

All Q4 E-trons use an 82-kWh battery pack with DC fast charging compatibility up to 125 kW. To extend the driving range, steering wheel paddles adjust between three different regenerative braking modes. The Q4 E-tron also uses navigation data to compensate for topography and other variables automatically. Audi offers free charging for a limited period through Electrify America charging stations.

Exterior design overlays hard edges and sharp angles atop existing Audi themes, while the interior boasts a high-tech appearance. Digital instrumentation, a 10.1-inch infotainment system display, touch-sensing controls, and a squared-off steering wheel dominate the design, and a floating pod houses the transmission controls. Audi says the Q4 E-tron models are dimensionally similar to the Audi Q5, inside and out.

Aside from the standard Multi-Media Interface (MMI) Touch Response infotainment system, several technology upgrades are available for the 2022 Q4 E-tron. Audi Virtual Cockpit upgrades the standard digital instrumentation, while a head-up display featuring augmented reality technology is also available as an option. Audi has chosen Sonos to provide the Q4 E-tron’s premium sound system components.

Safety systems include a who’s who list of modern Audi advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). Details are a little vague as this article is published, but the company’s Pre Sense collision preparation systems are available, as well as adaptive cruise control with Traffic Jam Assist. Blind-spot and lane-keeping technologies are also available.

The starting price point of under $45,000 puts it into competition with another premium compact crossover EVs like the Tesla Model Y and the Volvo C40 Recharge. Currently, EVs are eligible for a federal rebate of $7,500, and the Biden Administration has outlined plans to extend and expand rebates and tax incentives for EV purchases.

Audi will build the Q4 E-trons in Zwickau, Germany, in a factory certified to be net carbon-neutral and to use renewable electricity. Audi has announced that 30% of its lineup will be electrified by 2025 and has committed to net carbon neutrality by 2050.
