A San Mateo man was arrested Wednesday morning on suspicion of domestic violence after his girlfriend told police that he threatened her with a gun Monday night, police said.

Demarea Atkinson, 26, was arrested after a SWAT team served a search warrant at 5:15 a.m. on the 100 block of South Norfolk Boulevard in San Mateo.

Police said Atkinson was arrested without any trouble. He also allegedly choked his girlfriend.

The alleged domestic violence occurred at Ryder Court Park at 1625 J. Hart Clinton Drive sometime before 9:15 p.m. when police were dispatched to the park.

Police said Atkinson’s girlfriend told them she was able to get away from him and run for help following the threat and choking.

Police said they found evidence Wednesday morning that Atkinson had a gun in the alleged violence. Atkinson was taken to the county jail on suspicion of domestic violence, threats, brandishing a gun and carrying a loaded gun.

Police are encouraging residents to sign up for Nixle alerts to be warned of police activity in their area. Police sent out a Nixle alert Wednesday morning to tell residents they would be in their neighborhood.
