Fair skies prevailed over much of the nation Wednesday, although snow fell in Maine and the higher elevations of the Pacific Northwest, and the Southeast shivered amid record-setting cold.
A storm off New England brought up to six inches of snow to Maine and showers to eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Traces of snow also fell in western Pennsylvania.
Plunging temperatures in the Southeast set records as far south as Jacksonville, Fla., where the morning low of 37 eclipsed the old mark of 43.
Showers fell in parts of Washington, Idaho, Oregon and northern California. Higher elevations of the Northwest saw up to 4 inches of snow.
High pressure from the Gulf of Mexico into the Rocky Mountain states ensured fair to partly cloudy skies in much of the rest of the nation. The West was generally mild with temperatures in the Desert Southwest reaching the 80s.
Wednesday's temperatures in the Lower 48 states ranged from a morning low of 18 degrees in Orr, Minn., to a midday high of 86 in Gila Bend, Ariz.<
