Jose Santiago Jr.

A man contacted by police for loitering on the San Mateo Bayfront suspiciously was arrested after a vehicle pursuit in which he nearly struck a police officer Tuesday night, according to police.

At approximately 10:07 p.m., an officer approached the man in a dark parking lot on the San Francisco Bay Trail while on routine patrol around East Third Avenue and Anchor Road.

The officer spotted a blue Honda Civic backed into a parking spot with license plates registered to a Chevrolet. As officers approached, he took off and nearly struck the officer. He failed to stop, leading officers on pursuit into Hayward just east of the San Mateo Bridge.

He collided into a fence and fled into marshlands. Once he was arrested, he was identified as Jose Santiago Jr., 50, of South San Francisco.
