Police in Daly City are warning residents about a scam in which people claim to be with the Internal Revenue Service and demand gift cards as payment for unpaid taxes.

Police said a 20-year-old resident was recently a victim of the scam.

The victim reported that someone called him saying he was from the IRS, and the victim owed unpaid taxes.

The suspect told the victim he preferred that the victim pay the taxes with a gift card, so the victim purchased a $500 Google Pay gift card and gave the card code to the caller.

The caller then demanded an addition $600, and the victim purchased two more cards and gave the codes to the caller.

The caller then threatened to send the sheriff to the victim’s residence the next day if the victim didn’t send more money.

The victim became scared and contacted police.

Daly City police want to remind citizens that the IRS does not conduct business in that manner and does not ask for gift cards as payment for unpaid taxes.
