From Mess To Success™

Summers’ here! The visual of empty schoolyards and classrooms remind me of 3rd grade and staying after school to clean the chalkboards for Mrs. Alexander and her lemondrops. Now is a great time to clean the chalk board of your mind. The summer season carries with it a natural cycle of activity. It gets lighter earlier and stays light later; this is a time of renewal. Utilize your own ability to clean the chalk board of your mind and start fresh. World class athletes have this ability. Whether it’s a missed put or pitch, a dropped passed or unreturned serve; an athletes’ ability to start fresh has everything to do with their overall success. You have this skill too. Use this time and re-focus, focus on what you want instead of what you don’t want. Energy flows where focus goes. Start each day with a clean chalk board. What is written on that board at the end of the day is entirely up to you. What excites you? What are you excited about? What would you dare to do if you knew you could not fail?

Like a camera, your mind captures the pictures of what you focus on. When you are hammering a nail and focus on missing the nail this is what your body is directed to do. The pictures you leave to develop in the darkroom of your mind are the images that will show up. If you are not clearly focused the images captured will be blurry. Do you want your success to be blurry or clear? These images are what you call “life.” Visualize doing what you aren’t doing yet, success happens in your minds eye first. See it clearly, clarity delivers power. Once your mind is filled with pictures of what you want these pictures are what you will achieve.

Doubt of ability is not proof of inability. Once you resign yourself to saying you cannot do something, you will be limited. All things are possible for you, but potential stops at the sound of the word can’t. Have a clear picture of how you want things to be. Your potential is meant to be something undeveloped and is why it is potential. Substituting your undeveloped potential with an underdeveloped potential is a road block to your own personal success. Each day you wake is a new day. What is written on your board at the end of the day is entirely up to you. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a dream, today is a gift, it’s your present. Making the most of now is making the most of you. Your future is made up of all your now’s. I have made it a mission to turn can’t into can. What I can do has power in it. What I can contribute is what makes an impact. What I can give is what serves. If you were to spend this day more focused on what you can do instead of what you can’t do, you will pump up your ability to accomplish the tasks at hand with more power. This will turn your focus into action. Spending your time in the can gets rid of the waste product that “can’t” leaves in your life.

WARNING: The Surgeon General says enjoying what you do will lead to feelings of bliss and happiness! The smile you carry around on the inside and show on the outside reminds the world that you are making the most of each moment, this has rewards.

Hi Peter- I find your words to ring so true, and to hear what I have experienced put in such an eloquent and powerful way is truly uplifting and affirming! Thank you!
Sometimes, I forget to "visualize" and only do so as an afterthought....and am always surprised when it (whatever it may be) unfolds as I envisioned. Sometimes even freaked out. I think some people (myself included) are (subconsciously) afraid to get what they want; maybe that is the next step? 'Be careful what you wish for; it might come true!' is the motto I am working on erasing from my mental "chalk board".:)

Peter,

That is exactly what I needed to hear as I start a new teaching year in a very challenging school...I have been there for nine years now but know I am making a difference and that is why I stay...I teach in the very inner city of Sac where many teachers would not. I know that these kids need teachers that really care because they come from hard home environments.
I bring a smile everyday when I see my kids lined up and waiting for me...even though I know it might be a very difficult day...
I love what I do and that is what keeps me going...
I brought my freestanding kickboxing bag to school and told the boys that I would let them punch it...they love it...and didn't believe their teacher could possibly know how to use it. When I told them I have been punching this bag for years, they wanted to see and so I showed them.
Empowering children is so important and I enjoy every day in my job and I know you do too...even though our jobs are totally different...but the same, we empower people big and small...

enjoyed your column...

The abillity to "visual - eyes" our potential and future DOES erase boundaries and limitations, be they "inner-city", social, economic, what have you. Our past does not equal our future unless we live there. We may receive many blessings, yet if we are not able to see them for ourselves and "real - eyes" what is actually there then we will not be able to hold on to our blessings. For some, success is a fleeting concept they touch then seem to lose hold of.

This is the importance of seeing, what we want for our being!

Thank you for your thoughts!

It is great to have this reminder not to "sleepwalk" through the day but instead to take the time to have self awareness of the greatness of life. I love the concept of the "bliss break" as too often we are aware only of the difficult times.
