This is one of the reasons our children are not protected in San Mateo County.
This is the same Judge who Abused his discreation according to the Appellate Court in the Edith Delgado. He raised her bail to $3,000,000 without the prosecutor asking for it.

Now he reduces bail for Dr. William Ayres from $1,500.000.00 to $250,000.00

Dr. William Ayres told the victims "No one will believe you."

These kids have been speaking for many years, and their parents have been reporting for many years. This case was no secret to James P. Fox or Steve Wagstaffe or many people in Law Enforcement.

We San Mateo County has let these people down.

I just received this e-mail giving me permission.

I agree with Nita 100% that if it were not for Victoria ......not the Police and Not the District Attorney's Office, there would not be a current case against Dr. Ayres.

Here is the e-mail:

It is now OK for Nita MacDonald to mention my name on
your post. She is right - it is I who found the
victims, found the evidence that the San Mateo PD used
to get their search warrant in March 2006. And it is I
who got this current police investigation going after
one of the victims I had befriended died of a possible
suicide after telling me that no one in San Mateo -
not the police or anyone - was going to help the Ayres
victims. That is when I contacted Captain Mike
Callagy. All Callagy did was tell me that the victim
was "now at peace." This was in November 2005 and
there was absolutely no active police investigation.
They did not actively look for victims - I did, and
they asked me to turn over any names I found... But
when Captain Callagy said the victim was "at peace"I
got angry and emailed him that none of the victims
would be at peace until the police did something to
find new victims. That's when he asked me to prepare
documents on the victims and Ayres so they could get
their search warrant. I have been told by the police,
and the DA's office that if it were not for my
efforts, this case would not have happened.

The Associated Press did mention my efforts briefly in
a story a couple of days ago. So if Nita MacDonald now
wants to give me a little credit, please allow her to.
I have decided it is OK now.

In this article San Mateo County Counsel Thomas Casey III said he couldn't

Dr. William Ayres sold his personal residence 10/12/05 within 90 days of settling his civil case around July 14, 2005. His net proceeds from sale around $1,900,000.00 minus cost to settle......who knows what is left.

He does not own any real estate in San Mateo County as of today.

Dr. William Ayres and his attorney Jim Collins have not reached an agreement yet. Yesterday Jim Collins announced to the court that he was there as a special appearance. he also stated that he would not be in court today but he would try to find ssomenone to represent the Dr.

Who is to blame for sending children to Dr. Ayres after a “child” victim reported abuse to the police department back in 1970s. Why would anybody even think about taking the risk of another child being abused? There job was to look after these children. Parents trusted these individuals to make good choices, choices that were in the best interest of there children. I say there are a whole lot of individuals that are to blame for this happening. Judge Carl Holm raised bail to $750,000.00 which was half of what he orginally placed for the arrest warrant, $1,500,000.....Judge Thomas Smith SLASHED the bail to $250,000.00 with no explanation. Today after 2 more victims were added to the case and 4 more counts the bail was raised.....and PAID....I don't see how anyone can think Dr. William Ayres is not a threat to himself at this time.....He is losing everything.....he has 30 young men who are going to testify against him as of now and counting....I think the low amount of bail has put him at risk from himself....

I met this man several times back in 1968. We were constantly reminded of what a great guy he was and how he was from "Hillsborough" and had his own PBS show. He was my friend's "personal psychiatrist" and he seemed like a nice enough guy.

I find the whole thing quite disturbing especially since we were the ones who supposidly needed help. (We were 14 at that time)

I can only hope that my friend knew him before this trouble began.

Why on Earth would someone in his position, who knew how damaging this type of activity could be, do this to these kids?

Perhaps kids should be given a list of their rights before entering into a one on one meeting with any adult.

And how is it that this guy is not in Jail Beginning Now for the Rest of his Life?

Unfortunatley the answer is quite simple, We in San Mateo County have Judges who allow this to happen.

DDA Melissa McKowen has done everything possible to have this man behind bars and two of our Judges have allowed him out. They both knew he had over $1,000,000.00 Cash assets at time of arrest. Bail could have been set at $10,000,000.00 and he would have been able to post it.
This is an example of JUSTICE in San Mateo County. The power of the Judges.

I saw Dr. Ayres on the news and watched with horror as I realized I had paid this man thousands of dollars to help my son.. and luckily I sat in the waiting room when he had asked me to leave. I did not.. My son is a big kid and was very angry.. I called my son and he said that Dr. Ayres never touched him.. but reading all this has me so concerned.. This makes me sick.. I cant believe the man I paid to help was already accused of this.. My son saw him in 95.. and I didnt know and was referred by a fmcc. My son says he never touched him.. and he is doing well today but now I have so many questions.

The problem here is Gerry is making this statement to a reporter 9 months after Dr. William Ayres has settled a civil suit of molestation, and he has already sold his house in Burlingame to pay for it.

According to a recent article by Kim Curtis Associated Press Writer.

Deputy District Attorney Melissa McKowan is expected to add charges next week alleging that Dr. William Ayres molested four more boys who had been in his care, bringing the total to nine cases that can be prosecuted within the statute of limitations.

This whole case reminds me of Dr. Felix Polk. He too was a child psychiatrist who worked for the county, although not San Mateo County. He "had an affair with" an underage patient, whom he later married. Yes, if the victim is female, and the abuse is ongoing, the newspapers call it an affair. Some of his patients complained about this, but nothing happened. Fast-forward several decades, and Dr. Polk's child bride/patient snapped out and killed him. Dr. Polk has been heaped with praise by the county and by his colleagues, yet he was a leader in the Satanic Panic hysteria of the 1980s and suffered from schizophrenia. His wife never did receive adequate psychiatric care, and now has a fear of psychiatry--who can blame her?

The problem isn't just San Mateo County. The problem is systemic to the United States. A child's word that he or she was sexually abused is not considered evidence of abuse. Unless there is physical evidence or an adult witness, nothing will happen. If the parent of the alleged victim tells all her friends to avoid that doctor, because he molested her son, he could sue he for slander! After all, the allegation was unfounded. There was no evidence of abuse, just a child who said the doctor touched him. Everybody knows children are liars.

Dr. Ayres' victims went to prison? Not surprising. They saw that there was no justice at an early age. They were victimized by someone who should have helped them. They probably feel worthless. He ruined their lives instead of giving them therapy. Wouldn't it be ironic if the good doctor was put in the same prison as his victims? I wonder if he will even get any prison time, considering that there was no intercourse, and he is elderly. It almost doesn't matter, because no punishment can equal what he did to all those children.

Dr. Ayres lawyer, Doron Weinberg, has told the press that Ayres' victims (nearly 40 now, who have come forward) are reacting to "suggestions" and have somehow produced "false memories" in which Ayres' legitimate physical examinations were mistaken for sexual abuse.

First of all, Ayres seems to be alone among child psychiatrists in conducting "exams" of the genitals of boy patients (have any girls reported being subjected to "exams"?)

From what I have read, exams by a psychiatrist on children should be limited to neurological exams, which do not involve removing a boy's pants.

Although Ayres might have considered these "exams" to be "legitimate", its pretty clear that his colleagues to NOT consider undressing boys (NOTE: ONLY BOYS) during counseling sessions to be legitimate. That creates a lot of doubt in my mind about just what was going on during Ayres's "examinations". I'd say that its Ayres who has a credibility problem, not the kids whose penises he was evidently so interestes in "examining"

I think Weinberg will have a very hard time demonstrating that Ayres was merely doing "routine" exams, when none of his colleagues say that undressing patients in therapy sessions is at all "routine" - in fact, what Ayres was doing was extremely aberrant and suspicious.

Honorable Judge Thomas McGinn Smith reduced Dr. William Ayres BAIL from $1,500,000.00 to $250.000.......What was he thinking about.

Ayres is being accused of not just doing "exams", but of fondling and masturbating boys. The people making these accusations are grown men now, and they probably realize how serious these charges are. I think it is likely that the boys Ayres (allegedly) assaulted in this way could tell the difference between being "examined" by Ayres and Ayres playing with thier genitals. Since male genitals are external I'd say that the boys making the accusations had a better idea of what was going on during thier examinations than the women who accused the pelvic exam-giving doctor cited by Doron Weinberg as being a "similar" case to that of Ayres (never mind that that guy, who was acquitted, was a G.P. at Kaiser Hospital whose office was at least set up to do legit phyisical exams - Ayres had no reason at all, except in his own mind, to do "physicals" and he apparently improvised his "exam table" in his counseling office)

Hopefully at trial the extent of his abuse of these children will be revealed, whether just checking them out to get his jollies or actually fondling and masturbating them. I believe that Ayres, who is a smart pedophile (he's on the same moral level as those hapless creeps caught by Chris Hansen on "NBC Dateline: To Catch A Predator", but much cleverer) knows how to pick his victims and how far he can go with them while still maintianing the pretense of this contact being "medical"

I'm sure that Ayres defense will try to portray these unwarranted sexual contacts with boys as being part of his medical routine - after all, its apparently very important for Ayres to know (first hand!) the "Tanner Stages" of the boys sent to him for counseling.

This is going to be tough sell for Weinberg and Ayres!

According to a study at the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire, 80 % of sex abuse victims will never come forward to report the abuse.

The reason ? Shame. Embarrassment. Fear of ridicule by peers. Guilt that they didn't do anything to stop it.

People did not "keep quiet" about it for so long. There were complaints about Ayres dating back many years. If you have read the coverage of the story, two abuse accusations came from delinquents sent to Ayres for evaluation, and one was declared "unfounded" due to police bungling and loss of evidence (the $1000 "hush money" check Ayres allegedly sent an accuser's mother in 1987)

People are fearful to come forward because it is embarrassing and painful to talk.

Ultimately it will come down to he said-he said situation and the jury will have to decide who is more credible. The accusers will tell thier stories and Ayres will tell his. FYI- there is not a single child psychiatrist in the United States who makes boys take their pants off.

The majority of boys who were sent to Ayres were sent by their pediatricians. These pediatricians gave thorough physicals to the boys. When they found there was nothing wrong with them physically, they sent them off to Ayres,- who was supposed to be treating them for emotional problems in the mind. That's what a child psychiatrist does. Why in God's name would Ayres need to give the boys a "physical" again ? I asked my own psychiatrist, who was trained at Harvard, whether he had ever heard of a child psychiatrist giving a kids physicals and he said "Never. That's crazy."

Do your homework ! Read up on the priests cases. Talk to experts. 40 victims is actually a very small amount, considering that Ayres saw more than 2000 patients. More than 80 % of male abuse victims will NEVER come forward. That's because all abuse victims think THEY ARE THE ONLY ONE and that it was something they did to encourage the abuser. I have seen this reported over and over in abuse cases. How would you like to come forward, thinking you were the only one ? You would be scared to death.That's why most never do.

Historically, in cases where there have been multiple abuse cases, it always takes one brave victim coming forward to encourage others to come forward. There are not many out there who will risk being the first to come forward- they live in isolation and fear. So, when one brave person finally does come forward, that will encourage them to do so. But it is not piling on.

I have heard of many other Ayres victims out there who have not and will not ever come forward. They don't want to feel the shame; they fear being stigmatized. If I know of these victims - then think of how many others are out there around the country.
I strongly urge you to educate up on the history of how multiple abuse cases are reported. There is a lot of material out there. And please don't judge until you have been a victim yourself. You can't possibly know what it's liike to come forward until you've been there.

If any of the people making accusations against Ayres are lying or embellishing thier stories with an eye to getting money from some yet-to-be launched civil lawsuit, it seems to me that that there would be discrepancies in thier stories could be detected during the criminal trail. If any of Ayres accusers have made up stories, they should know that they are committing a crime by lying to the police and prosecutors.


As to Roscoe Beedle's question "how do you defend yourself against charges over something that happened years ago with no witnesses?" the answer to that is what Ayres is doing now - he's denying that there was any molestation and saying that the accusers may have "adjusted" thier memories of his (allegedly) legitimate physical exams. The amount of money survivors of sexual abuse get in a lawsuit is minuscule compared to the damage the abuse does to our lives. Coming forward takes tremendous courage. Defense attorneys drag victims and survivors through the mud. Here someone who doesn't even know the victims is already questioning their motives, stigmatizing them, making it harder for other victims to come forward.

After my abuser died, we discovered he had married two other women with 11 yr. old daughters and was engaged to a third--that makes four young girls he victimized, that we know of. None of his victims ever pressed charges. We were all afraid for our lives and our families' lives. Later, we were embarrassed and ashamed. 30 years later, my mother still insists that I not tell the rest of the family about the incest, because she is embarrassed. It's like I was in a train wreck that took years to recover from, and I'm not supposed to tell anyone about it. My relatives wonder why I spent so many years in poverty, like I'm some kind of lowlife. I didn't get any emotional support in my recovery, because Mother was embarrassed by my ordeal. Ayres's victims are going through the same thing. They need support, not censure.

I wonder how many of Ayres's victims have remained silent because their mothers and fathers don't want to be embarrassed? It is a terrible thing to suffer in silence. It is a terrible thing to break the silence and be re-victimized by ignorant people in public forums. Kudos to the brave men who have come forward. You are heroes.

People did not "keep quiet" about it for so long. There were complaints about Ayres dating back many years. If you have read the coverage of the story, two abuse accusations came from delinquents sent to Ayres for evaluation, and one was declared "unfounded" due to police bungling and loss of evidence (the $1000 "hush money" check Ayres allegedly sent an accuser's mother in 1987)

I understand there was another court hearing for Ayres today. Apparently his lawyer has said he wants to file to suppress the list of patient names the police siezed last year, but so far they have not done so.

Now, it seems Ayres's lawyer is going to try to invalidate the search warrant of his records, which led to the finding of victims he molested recently enough to be withing criminal statute. Apparently, Weinberg (Ayres' lawyer) dug up a 1988 case in which a search warrant on a therapist accused of sexually molesting a minor was invalidated because it "violated psychotherapist-patient privilege"

I read that the DA's office believes that the majority of Ayres' victims came from Hillcrest Juvenile Hall and the courts. DA Steve Wagstaffe said that Ayres threatened a young boy who didn't like what Ayres was doing to him. The boy said that Ayres told him, "Who's going to believe you, a troubled youth, over me?"

Well, at this juncture Dr. Ayres, I will believe every single kid over you any time !

I am wondering if Ayres ever tried to make a deal with the juveniles. Maybe he said to them,"If you let me do this to you, then I'll make sure you get a light sentence or no sentence." Seems to me that this guy got his kicks from his dangerous behavior. What's to say that he didn't make a pact with the juveniles ? I have heard that when the molestation civil suit against Ayres was being settled in 2005, that Judge Diaz was making her views loud and clear in the courthouse that the police better be careful in investigating Ayres, because she and Ayres were friends.

In 1987, Diaz was the supervising attorney in the San Mateo branch of the DA's office. Did police officers Rick Nielsen and Lee Violett- both friends of Diaz - go to her about Ayres- and then she told them to stop investigating ? At what point did San Mateo PD's file on Greg Hogue - along with the check for $1000 that Ayres sent to the Hogue family after the cops confronted him - go missing ? Was Diaz aware of this check ? Did someone dispose of the file ? The Chronicle reporter John Cote has written about this check and touched on the Diaz/Ayres connection, but someone needs to go deeper.

If the DA's office had prosecuted Ayres back in 1987, we wouldn't have Diaz continuing to send boys to Ayres for the next 20 years - boys who continued to be molested .

The Dr. Ayres preliminary hearing is Tuesday August 7 at 9:00 am. The prosecutor is expected to put on a half day's worth of evidence.

So far, I have heard Ayres' lawyer make up every excuse in the book about the victims --- they "imagined" the whole thing; they "misinterpreted " the exams ( physical exams by the way, which no other child psychiatrist in America is known to do) or that the victims who have come forward are it for the publicity.
What man for god's sake would want to come forward to say he was molested for publicity ? It is incredibly painful to testify.. This is just nonsense.

Also, in a victim's civil suit against Ayres in 2005, Ayres gave about four different explanations for the "physicals". First he says he has maybe given three physicals to boys over the years. Then he says he never asked a boy to take his pants down....He's all over the map.

He also says he never gave kids presents ( this is the "grooming" technique that pedophiles use. But there are dozens and dozens of boy patients who said he did. I know of one victim who was taken by Ayres on weekend shopping trips to the Talbot's hobby section. Ayres bought him tons of presents and never charged the boy's parents.....Ayres also denies in his deposition ever buying a present for a kid at Talbots. Sounds to me like he spent thousands of dollars over the years doing just that.

I have been following this case since Ayres arrest because of my close friend's personal association to it as a family member of a victim. I sat through yesterdays hearing and was personally taken back by the victim accounts related by Detective Decker. I too commend the very thorough case that was presented by Decker and the DA. I know the San Mateo police have been criticized for their handling of the earlier case but it is obvious now that the new cases are in the right hands with Decker. Well, perhaps it's starting to dawn on Ayres' defense that thier pretext that Ayres's patients had mistaken legitimate "exams" for abuse (or even - and this is pretty crazed - that someone else molested them and they've mistakenly identified Ayres as the culprit) probably will not be very convincing to a jury.

So, we can now expect all sorts of motions and delaying tactics and technical challenges to the search warrant, the statute of limitations, etc.

It is in Ayres's intrest to extend the process as long as possible and complicate it as much as possible because, simply, the truth is not on his side. His excuses stink and he knows it.

There's going to be a lot of legal game-playing but very little in the way of vindictating evidence on Ayres's side. When you're caught lying (under oath), as Ayres has been about the extent of his "exams", a "he-said, he-said" dispute with several dozen people who have said under oath that you abused them isn't likely to go in your favor.

When you have an elderly perv as a client whose guilt is fairly obvious, what do you do? Try to run out the clock.

The reasoning behind Ayres' lawyer's challenge to the search warrant makes Ayres "right to privacy" more important than protecting the public from a child sexual predator. It will be a long shot to get a judge to agree.

Without a search warrant to get a criminal case, Ayres would still be in practice, more than likely continuing to inflict his "physical exams" on young boys.

The doctor-patient/therapist-client privilege is not designed to shield doctors from their own wrongdoing.

Additionally, Weinberg also seems to overestimate what's possible for the defense to achieve, even if - and it’s a real stretch - even if he can get a judge to agree that the search of Ayres' records was improper. Even if the search warrant is judged improper, the boys Ayres abused, whose testimony Weinberg seeks to invalidate as "fruit of the poisoned tree", can still come back and file another case against Ayres. But, that, of course, will take more time - years and years, and it may not be Weinberg's problem at that point. Perhaps he's counting on Ayres croaking before he ever has to face a jury.

What's most laughable is Weinberg's claim that this case is so very very complicated - what he means is it's complicated for HIM, because he has to come up with some excuse for Ayres to be doing "exams" on boys. Yeah, that's "complicated" - he still hasn't figured out exactly what to say Ayres was up to. A jury will be able to suss what was really going on, which is actually pretty simple. He gets young boys alone in his office - young enough not to question what he's doing, makes them strip and plays with their genitals. And he's done it over and over and over for 40 years. The evidence for that is pretty overwhelming.

Despite Weinberg's claim that the chances for "erroneous recollection, suggestion, transference” are great, does he really think that 40 witnesses telling similar stories won't be seen by a jury as corroborating each other?

Weinberg is just delaying and playing games. I'm sure he knows his client is guilty, and that there's precious little chance that he's going to convince a jury that Ayres's "physical exams" on boys were legitimate, so his goal is delay, delay, delay.

I have learned that many mental health professionals - some of whom worked for San Mateo County Mental Health services - knew what Ayres was up to and yet failed to report him to authorities, as they were mandated to by law. Instead of reporting Ayres, they simply stopped sending boys to Ayres. Great !

I also know of a pediatrician who referred boys to Ayres. One father asked the pediatrician if it was normal for Ayres to be making his kids strip and showing them "anatomical drawings." And what did this pediatrician do ? According to the father, all he did was "sidestep the question and look uncomfortable."

If I know of four people like this doctor , how many others are there out there who failed to address what was happening in San Mateo's backyard ? And why did it take someone from outside San Mateo County to alert the County as to what was going on ?

I'm of the opinion that much of psychiatry is a scam, and many people in the so-called "helping" professions are led into thier fields by dark motives. There seems to be an equivalent of the "blue wall of silence" among psychiatrists - an unwillingness to expose a member of one's own "in-group" to outside scrutiny.

Apparently, although none of Ayres's colleagues cared enough to look into his habit of giving nude physical exams to boys, rumors about him did circulate among his peers and some of them suspected enough to not refer children to him.

What angers me is that his partners in his own psychiatric practice, when they questioned Ayres about undressing a boy, accepted his bogus explanation that he needed to know what the boy was "dealing with", and that necessitated a nude, full-body exam. Ayres' partners just accepted that - even though it was outrageous, then and now. Was it ever okay for a doctor - especially one who treats the mind, not the body, to put a boy through an invasive experience he clearly did not want, just so the doctor can satisfy his curiosity about the boy's penis? I do not see any other way to undertand Ayres's supposed need to see "what he's dealing with" than as a creepy sexual interest, barely disguised as some sort of "medical" procedure

Finally it seems like Ayres may actually have to pay for decades of victimizing children. His excuse that he was giving legitimate medical exams which were "misinterpreted" or somehow "recast as abuse" in memory will not wash with a jury if it has any common sense. Hopefully Ayres will have a lot of time in prison to think about what he did to all those kids. And frankly, I hope that the other prisoners there make it an unpleasant time for him

There are striking similarities between his case and Dr. William Ayres. They both told kids that they were doing their physicals under the guise of some ridiculous medical reason...

Boy, these doctors who molest kids are all beginning to sound like they all knew each other and compared notes... Did Ayres take pictures ? Has he gotten them hidden away somewhere ?

And like Ayres, Reardon once worked in Boston. They were both there at the same time.

In the Harford Courant story on the late Dr. Reardon's collection of homemade child pornography I noticed that among Dr. Reardon's excuses for suspicious "physical exams" (which, as a pediatrician, he had quite more of a legitimate-seeming pretext for than Ayres, a psychiatrist) was this: "He claimed that he was conducting growth studies — his area of expertise was childhood sexual development — and he would manipulate the genitals of children"

Gosh! So I guess we should not be surpised that when Ayres' partners asked him why he was undressing little boys in his office, Ridlehuber and company were perfectly satisfied when Ayres said he needed to see "the psycho-sexual development of a boy to really know what a boy was dealing with" - because for Ayres, like Dr. Reardon, looking at the genitals of child patients was all in day's work, and of course, 100% innocent. Until of course, scores of hidden porn photos turn up hidden in a cache somewhere, or dozens of former patients come forward saying that the doctor's contact went well beyond "examinations"

I'm thankful that unlike Dr. Reardon, Dr. Ayres may have to face time behind bars for his sexual abuse, not just a slap on the wrist and a quick "retirement"

Roscoe, there are many reasons for molestation survivors to stay silent. Fear and shame are the two biggies. There is such a stigma on molestation victims, especially boys. If molested by a man, they are sneered at as effeminate or homosexual. Gay males who get molested often hate their sexuality because they think being molested "made them gay." Imagine the horror of your first sexual encounter being forced, when you were a child. Would you want to remember? Or tell anybody?

I am an incest survivor. I was so embarrassed by my stepfather's actions that I never thought of telling anyone until I was an adult. I just wanted to pretend it wasn't happening. My stepfather threatened to kill me, the whole family, and anyone I told, followed by suicide. I didn't understand why he felt the need to threaten me, when I was embarrassed to death. I wanted to kill myself from shame. I tried it a couple times, too.

When I finally told my mother (after her husband left her for a woman with a younger daughter) she blamed me! I was the little tramp who seduced her husband. WTF? I was a painfully shy, 12 yr. old bookworm when the pedophile started his abuse. I didn't know anything about men, being raised without a father or grandfather. I was totally naive, yet starved for paternal affection. When he betrayed me, I thought it was my fault for loving my stepfather.

I was kicked out of my extended family, lest I embarrass my mother by telling the rest of the family. Less naive victims don't tell their families because they know they will be blamed and/or not believed. The pain of being rejected--not believed, or blamed for the abuse, is almost as bad as the abuse itself. It's yet another betrayal.

Why tell? It isn't going to make your own pain stop, you think to yourself. Too often the authorities don't do anything, don't save other children from the predator. Kids came forward, and Ayres was still allowed to practice. So why re-traumatize yourself by coming forward?

In reality, every time I tell, it gets a little better. No one has been killed, as my stepfather is long dead. No one except my mother has ever blamed me, or accused me of lying. But I didn't know telling would help until I had therapy. It took years of therapy and support from my survivor group before I could tell people.

I think what you said completely explains why kids don't just reflexively run out to tell somebody when they've been molested by an adult, right after it happens. Most especially when someone in your own family is the perpetrator. It seems strange, but many adults, when they think about the trauma caused by sexual abuse on a child, can't seem to imagine what it might be like in the mind of a child - to feel a mix of guilt, shame and insecurity and hoping you can just make the experience go away by keeping silent about it.

I have met Dr. Ayres and I can say that while, on the surface, he can appear friendly, cooperative and personable, there is something seriously "off" about the guy. Reporters have described his attempts at friendly small talk as CREEPY and weird (Recalling his days as a "sex educator", he told one reporter, unbidden, of course, that women used to think soda pop could be used as a contraceptive. HUH??!!!)

It angers me to see his lawyer, Doron Weinberg, dare to describe the dozens of complaints about Ayres received by police before the warrant, as well as his hesitantly-acknowledged-but-never-quite-adequately-explained habit of giving boy patients full-body nude exams, as being an "unprecedented" and "purely speculative" basis for an exemption to be made to Ayres's "psychotherapist-patient privilege"

As if there wasn't enough smoke coming out to indicate fire underneath.

Ayres, abetted by Weinberg, has lied and used various attention-diverting and delaying strategies since this case was startedm but someday, he is going to have confront the reality of his unwarranted "exams", and come out of his personal Bizarro world and deal with the real world, in which he's been given the benefit of the doubt MANY, MANY, MANY more times than he deserves.


Has anyone on this discussion group seen the 1931 film "M", starring Peter Lorre? ("I can't help what I do!...Who knows what it's like to be me??!!") I predict a similar denouement for Ayres, provided he can somehow be prodded out of his deep denial.

Perhaps from now on the papers should refer to him as Mr. Ayres. The Attorney General has suspended his medical license. And I would think that he is no longer welcome at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or the American Psychiatric Association .

What I would like to know is how Ayres is going to explain away the fact that in the 2005 civil suit he told the victim's lawyers that he gave maybe two or three physicals to kids in all the years he was practising ? And yet he told his partners he did them all the time... he was trained to do that in Boston. How come people who trained with him in Boston aren't buying that ?

It would seem to me that if Ayres is on the stand he has a lot of "splainin'" to do... he's gonna twist himself in knots. Let us hope that in 2008, all of his victims have a chance to make their voices heard !

Dr. Bryant was one of Ayres' partners who knew that he was undressing boys. She said nothing. Psychiatrist Dr. Al Rainieri knew that Ayres was undressing boys. He had his suspicions. He did nothing.

There are stories that psychologist Al Fricke knew too and did nothing.

There must be dozens of others in the mental health field who did nothing. Shame on those mental health professionals who covered for Ayres for decades and permitted him to keep on molesting boys. The County is as complicit as the Catholic Church. How did Ayres snow them for so long ?

My son was seen by Ayres but says Ayres did not molest him. Ayres knew who he could and could not Victimize he was a psychiatrist for goodness sake. My question is this...

You can see on the website of KCBS channel in an April 2007 report on Ayres, that they conducted an interview with a former patient of Ayres who wanted to remain anonymous who said that when he saw Ayres as a young teen, Ayres gave him a nude full-body exam and he was made to understand that nude exams were "routine".

The man says he wasn't molested, but now that the accusations have come out about some of Ayres's "exams" went further than just looking - involving touching and stroking boys' penises (and according to what we know now from the criminal charges, even anal probing), he began to wonder if the "exam" Ayres made him undergo was really neccessary. Ayres is a clever and manipulative pedophile, who knows how to select and "groom" his victims. If he could see that the child was more defiant than cooperative, he knew better than to initiate a molestation. But, (in contradiction to a deposition in which he claimed that he only rarely did nude exams) he seems to have taken advantage of the opportunity to make boys strip for him, when he determined he could easily get away with it.

Here's what Dr. Ayres said: " I don't know that I have ever asked a child to take their pants down."

How is he going to reconcile what he said there with this anecdote in a story about these physical exams in the San Mateo County Times in September ?:

Ayres' lawyer appealed the judges ruling about the legality of the search warrant. Instead of a judge, it's Attorney General Jerry Brown's office who will decide whether the warrant was legal.

You don't "resurrect your reputation" by saying that, rather than supporting "probable cause" for a search warrant, the testimony from numerous boys that Ayres undressed and fondled them before 1985 is in fact "stale" evidence! See? It doesn't mean that he's a pedophile who continued to molest boys. Oh, no, it means that if anything ever happened it probably stopped right before criminal statute would kick in. According to Weinberg, accused pedophiles often stop molesting just in time so it doesn't fall under criminal statute.

Now how could the court be so unjust as to "damage" Ayres for things he didn't do that the police shouldn't have found out about anyway because there was no reason to suspect him in the first place? Viola! Presto-change-o! Weinberg turns Ayres from predator to victim. Welcome to Weinberg's bizzaro-world! Anybody buying it?

For the sake of the victims, let us get the show on the road. Ayres is out on bail and busy going to the symphony in San Francisco (where he walked right past one of the mothers of one his victims, much to her anger and disgust) . Meanwhile, his victims are suffering enormously. Ayres may deny it, but he knew exactly what he was doing and he knows that it was wrong.

That's why he got caught. Karmic payback. There is justice in this world.

I can't speak for Stogner on other cases, but he is right that the San Mateo PD seems to have given Ayres a pass in 1987 after victim Greg Hogue came forward to say he that Ayres had been molested. This has been documented by the San Francisco Chronicle. The Chronicle quotes Hogue as saying that after he made the police complaint, Ayres mysteriously sent his mother a check for $1000. At the urging of Greg's mother's therapist, who suspected it was a bribe to keep quiet, the mother turned the check over to officer Rick Nielsen at the San Mateo PD. The check - and Greg Hogue's file -were subsequently "lost." How come ? What did Nielsen do with the check ? We don't know the answers to this but I would like to see a grand jury investigate.

It is my understanding that the Citizens Review Panel made a formal request to the civil grand jury to investigate, but the grand jury says they don't have the power to investigate the judiciary and doctors who knew what Ayres was doing, etc. So if, they don't, who does ?

Defense should be allowed to make that motion, but prosecutors should also stipulate they will provided Mr. Ayers agrees to submit himself for a polygraph at the VeraCenter!

This not only would clear Mr. Ayers of any guilt on his part, it also lets prosecution know they do not have a valid case to file against him. If Mr. Ayers in innocent, the quickest way he can prove it, and get them behind him
is to pass the test. However, if Mr. Ayers fails it, the polygraph should be used against him in the defense of his accuers!

Doctor/patient privilege is to protect the patient's privacy, not the doctor's crimes. The New York Times has a front page story today on pediatrician and best-selling author Dr. Mel Levine, who has been accused by 43 men of molesting them when they were little boys. I think what Mr. Stogner is trying to say is that there had been a number of complaints to the Medical Board, the San Mateo PD and to Ayres' own partners about Dr. Ayres for at least the past twenty years, and most likely earlier than that. Mothers even went to Ayres' own medical partners to complain. If people - in particular his medical partners - had stepped up to the plate as they should have,years ago- then Ayres would have been stopped. But no one did, and so now we have a shocking number of victims. Some have died, quite likely as a result of what Ayres did to them.

No, I wouldn't say in this case, Better Late Than Never. As in the case of the Catholic priests, there were red flags galore about Dr. Ayres but somehow these were ignored and shoved under the rug.
