We all want clean air...

Yet for two years, the San Mateo City Council has refused to adopt a residential wood smoke ordiance making it illegal to burn on "spare the air" days.

On spare the air nights, particulate pollution is high enough to cause long-term damage to the lungs of residents and is responsible for increasing cases of respitratory desease.

In fact, if you can small the smoke, your lungs are being damaged. Numerous medical studies support these facts.

Wood smoke pollution is the single largest stationary source of pollution, contributing 1/3 of particulate pollution in the Bay Area. In many neighborhoods, it is the primary source.

Mayor Matthews and city council have recently recieved accolades for making a few new city buildings energy efficient. In reality, limiting wood smoke would have a far greater positive impact on air quality and the reduction in greenhouse gases, but the mayor has indicated he has no intention of adopting an ordiance.

Eight counties and 41 cities in the Bay Area have wood smoke ordiances. Why not San Mateo?

the winter of 2006 / 2007 has been the worst year for particulate pollution since 1991. Your health and the health of your family is a stake.

We all want clean air....

If you agree, please email Mayor Matthews and city council telling them you care about your family's respiratory health and that you support a wood smoke ordinance.
