It appears that San Bruno Mayor Franzella caved in to the Fireman's Union during contract negotiations and, with the help of the other City Council members, is planning on giving platinum contracts to this union and other City unions that are negotiating for their contracts. This Council is giving away money and benefits at San Bruno's City Hall to the City employee unions like it's Christmas time in January. Looks like there are going to be a lot of firefighters and other City employees running around San Bruno with their fat paychecks and platinum benefit packages, while San Bruno's residents are buried under the huge water, sewer, and garbage rate increases this Council passed in 2006. If there were 3 Council members on the San Bruno City Council who truly represented the interests of San Bruno's residents, you can be sure that this salary and benefit bonanza giveaway would not be taking place because San Bruno cannot afford this. San Bruno has been running a budget deficit for many years since Franzella has been Mayor. Is that any surprise?
Franzella says,
“I personally don’t believe employees should have to pay [for health insurance],”
Too bad most companies in the private sector don't pay 100% of their employee health insurance costs and 80% of the cost for employee family members. This is a case of a city government that is out of control, spending beyond its limits. San Bruno has had a chronic budget deficit for many years now and the City Council is making it worse. More than 80% of the City budget in San Bruno goes to pay for City employee salaries, benefits, and perks.
If you live in San Bruno, take a look at the huge increases in your water, sewer, and garbage bills this year. Take a look at all of the other increases in what you pay for San Bruno City services. Franzella and his buddies on the rubber stamp City Council voted to increase these rates. And now, they are giving the City employees huge pay increases and even paying for all of their health insurance. Wait until the election comes in November, you will see all the unions and out there working hard to make sure Franzella, Ruane, and O'Connell get re-elected. The unions want to keep their supporters in power.
The question is, who speaks for the average San Bruno resident who isn't getting a fat paycheck, benefit and retirement plan paid for with the taxpayer dollars that are being handed out by Franzella and the other stooges on the San Bruno City Council? The answer is nobody.
In this City Council's world, taxpayers get all the rate increases and fee hikes for City services to help offset the money the Council is handing out to the special interest groups like unions and garbage companies who always seem to show up as their supporters on the campaign materials of their supporters on the City Council at election time. The Council should represent the interests of the residents of San Bruno and should hold the line during negotiations for union and garbage contracts so that San Bruno can balance its budget and hold down costs for San Bruno's residents. Instead, this Council burdens San Bruno's residents with astronomical bills for City services.
Instead of giving City employees platinum pay and benefit packages, this Council should be reducing rates and fees on City services and giving San Bruno's residents a break.
If you don't have one of the high paying jobs down at San Bruno City Hall, think about this when election time comes because it is your taxpayer money that is being handed out down at City Hall.
