The San Mateo County Elections Department, run by Chief Elections Officer Warren Slocum, published a Semi-Official Election Results report on November 7, 2006 (a day after the election) at 1:30 AM, showing that they have only been able to count results for 239 of 518 precincts overall and a fraction of the results in more local precincts (i.e., Pacifica 13 of 30 precincts).
Looks like Slocum is having problems handling the voting technology that he spent (maybe wasted) millions of taxpayer dollars on. Other California counties had published their complete election results within hours after the November 6th election. However, it appears that the San Mateo County Elections Department just couldn't get it's act together on election day or well into the day following the election. I think San Mateo County's voters deserve fast and reliable election results considering the amount of money Slocum may have wasted on technology that appears to be less capable than the technology that it replaced. Instead, San Mateo County's Elections Department can't even figure out how to publish a vote count of more than 152 of 518 precincts (the count from the 11:30 PM report published on November 6, 2006) the same day as the election takes place. I think this is clearly unacceptable.
If the San Mateo County Elections Department is finding it so hard to count the votes, we have to ask ourselves why? We also have to look into the reasons why there appears to be such a vote counting problem at the San Mateo County Elections Board after so much money has been spent buying new "high tech" voting equipment? Can we rely on the results being generated by the San Mateo County Elections Department who are finding it so difficult to produce timely election results? Exactly who was involved in the purchase of this this new computer voting equipment, what was the vetting process for this purchase, and what were the terms of the purchase?
Is a Grand Jury or State investigation required into the workings of San Mateo County's Elections Department?
