I know this may be a mouthful but the Padres are on the verge of doing some special things following their 33-20 win over Bellarmine Friday night.
I know there is a lot of season left but if the Padres can run the table, I think they have a legitimate chance to be in one of the state bowl championship games.
If the Padres can get by nemesis St. Francis this weekend and can beat Mitty later in the season, they could lock up the WCAL title. If they manage that, I would bet they would be the odds-on favorite to be the top seed in the CCS Open Division playoffs. A CCS championship would give them sufficient ammunition to be in the first state championship bowl series.
I'm not sure how it works, but I would imagine that teams would play in their school enrollment division.
If Serra finishes the season with just one loss —*to De La Salle no less —*it could make a case for one of the best seasons in the history of the school.
While there will be a number of teams clamoring for a spot in the state championship game, the Padres would have an impressive resume. The WCAL is one of toughest — if not THE toughest —*league in Nor Cal. If the Padres finish the WCAL season undefeated, it would be hard not to consider them for the state title game.
Of course now that I say this I'll probably jinx them.
