Suspected car burglar pleads not guilty
January 01, 2014, 05:00 AM Daily Journal Staff Report

Clinton Skelley

A 27-year-old San Francisco man who authorities believe burglarized at least 10 cars in San Mateo pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the drugs and personal property of others found in his possession when arrested, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Clinton James Skelley was on felony probation for burglary and bad checks when San Mateo police responded to a complaint on 36th Avenue of men rummaging through garbage cans on Dec. 27. Officers searched Skelley due to his probation conditions and reported finding seven bags of methamphetamine, two bags of heroin, $2,000 in cash and other people’s property. Nearby, the officers reported finding several more bags of personal property stolen from unlocked cars and many pieces of identification belonging to other people. The property was later linked to 10 vehicle burglaries.

At his initial arraignment, Skelley asked for a court-appointed attorney and pleaded not guilty to all charges. He did not waive his right to a speedy trial and returns to court Jan. 13 for a preliminary hearing.

Bail was set at $25,000 and he remains in custody.
