Aragon High School’s student newspaper, the Outlook, won a national award during a convention sponsored and presented by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association in San Francisco this past spring. The Aragon publication captured the “Best in Show” prize for its April 25, 2013 edition among entries of at least 17 pages.

Madeleine Steckley, a senior at Capuchino High School, is the new student member of the San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees. She will serve in that non-voting capacity through the fall semester in 2013-14. Her first official meeting was July 31. The student board member position is rotated between district schools twice a year, during the fall and spring semesters.

Ten 2013 San Mateo Union High School District seniors were named winners of National Merit Scholarships. Winners were Sangwon Yun, Garrett Tan, Brandon Liu and Marie Mihara of Aragon High School; Grace Hu, Jack Spira and David Willoughby of Burlingame High School; Catherine Su of Mills High School; and Shadi Barhoumi, Diane Liu and Victoria Xiao of San Mateo High School.

The San Mateo-Foster City Elementary School District recognized Eleanor Lindquist Britter of the Peninsula Special Interest Lions Club for her contributions toward student wellness at a board meeting Oct. 3.

Notre Dame High School students, Crystal Batshon ’15 and Devin Johnston ’17 and chorus teacher/orchestra conductor Kristin Pfiefer, all received Jefferson Awards for public service. The awards were presented on Sept. 18.
