San Mateo man charged for allegedly stabbing mom

The San Mateo man accused of stabbing his mother late Monday afternoon appeared in court yesterday for the first time since police reportedly found him standing over the injured woman.

John Jacobberger, 53, was charged with attempted murder causing great bodily injury on a woman over 70 years old, felony assault, felony physical elder abuse and, on all three counts, the allegation he used a knife in the Aug. 12 incident that sent his 76-year-old mother to the hospital.

Just before 4 p.m. Monday, police said they found the woman on the floor and Jacobberger next to her on the second floor of an apartment complex on the first block of West Fourth Avenue in San Mateo.

The mother had come to check on Jacobberger and spotted him inside on a chair surrounded by knives. She asked him to grab his backpack so they could go see his doctor, said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Jacobberger picked up a kitchen knife and attempted to exit, overpowering the woman as she pushed against the screen door, and slashed at her, Wagstaffe said.

She was stabbed once in the chest and upper arm. When police arrived, he reportedly dropped the knife and drifted in and out of coherence. He also told police “I stabbed my mother, just shoot me” and “It’s the drugs that made me do it,” Wagstaffe said.

Jacobberger declined to enter a plea at Thursday afternoon’s arraignment and instead asked for a court-appointed attorney. Both are due back in court Aug. 19 and he remains in custody without bail.

Jacobberger was charged with misdemeanor drunk driving in the 1980s but has no other criminal history in San Mateo County, according to court records. Jacobberger remains in custody.
