Longtime volunteer, congressional aide, dies
October 16, 2010, 12:19 AM

Betty Carlson, a longtime aide to the late congressman Tom Lantos and a community volunteer, died at her Burlingame home Sunday.

She was recently diagnosed with cancer. She was 93.

Carlson was a registered nurse and volunteered at Mills-Peninsula Hospital in San Mateo and was office manager for the San Mateo congressman for nearly 25 years. She was known for her large, black-framed round glasses and compassionate yet professional attitude. At Lantos’ office, she was a caseworker specializing in issues affecting senior citizens and veterans.

In 2007, she was inducted into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame.

She is survived by her son Eric Carlson and husband Sten Carlson, 98. Donations can be made to the Elizabeth Carlson Memorial Fund at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in San Francisco or to the charity of your choice.
