Police: Elderly driver hits five pedestrians in downtown Palo Alto
July 31, 2014, 05:00 AM Bay City News Service

Six people were injured, one critically, when a car crashed into a café during lunchtime in Palo Alto this afternoon, police said.

The crash was reported at 12:36 p.m. at 271 University Ave., the location of University Café, according to police.

Officers responded to the scene after receiving several 911 calls about a car that had driven into a building, injuring several people.

Police said the initial investigation indicates a man in his 90s was attempting to parallel park in front of the cafe when he accidentally accelerated and hit a parked vehicle before driving onto a sidewalk and hitting five pedestrians.

One of the pedestrians was critically injured and the other four suffered minor injuries. The driver also suffered minor injuries, police said.

An update on the victims’ conditions wasn’t immediately available as of late this afternoon.

The incident is still under investigation, but police said it doesn’t appear drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

The driver has not been arrested or cited for the incident.
