A student at Skyline College in San Bruno who was shot on campus early this month is in jail this weekend for allegedly being a gang member with a gun and is scheduled to appear in San Mateo County Superior Court on Wednesday. Eric Douglas Brewer, 20, was shot once in the buttocks at about 1:30 p.m. Sept. 2 in a campus parking lot. He was transported to San Francisco General Hospital and released within the week.

Police believe an altercation between two groups preceded the shooting, which prosecutors with the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office are calling gang-related.

Brewer pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of being a gang member in possession of a handgun, and Commissioner Hugo Borja set his bail at $100,000, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

A hearing to reduce his bail is set for Wednesday, and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 30.

Three other men were arrested for their alleged involvement, but prosecutors charged only one, 18-year-old Germaine Benjamin, in connection with the shooting.

Brewer allegedly game Benjamin a handgun during the incident, which Benjamin dropped in a trash can near the school, Wagstaffe said.

Thomas has pleaded not guilty and his bail was set at $50,000. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 6.

The shooting prompted a lockdown at the school, and students described feeling “shocked” that such an event had taken place on campus. The college is situated in a quiet residential neighborhood.
