Tri-School Productions, the award-winning drama program featuring students and staff from Mercy, Notre Dame and Serra high schools, proudly presents “Footloose.”  Based on the 1984 film of the same name starring a young Kevin Bacon, this exciting musical follows the story of Ren (Serra sophomore Matthew Elkins), a typical Chicago teenager who moves with his single mother Ethel (Mercy senior Maddie Williams) to the mythical, small, rural town of Bomont.  While prepared for a typical adjustment period Ren is not prepared for the strict, local laws, including a ban on all dancing, laws that have been instituted at the urging of the conservative Reverend Shaw (Serra senior Eric Foard). With locals both young and old ready to judge the new kid in town as trouble, things are made worse when Shaw’s rebellious daughter Ariel (Notre Dame senior Katherine Russell) falls for Ren, much to the chagrin of her abusive boyfriend Chuck (Serra senior Kyle Morrissey).  The heartwarming story that unfolds is of a boy yearning for the father who walked out on him and a father longing for the son he lost, set to a rocking Oscar and Tony nominated score by Tom Snow and Dean Pitchford.  Performances are 7:30 p.m. March 20, March 21, March 27 and March 28 and 2 p.m. March 22 at the Gellert Auditorium on the Serra campus at 451 W. 20 Ave. in San Mateo. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors and may be purchased at the Serra bookstore during regular school hours and at the door.

Students at the Montessori Early Learning Center at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont don wacky hats and some hold their favorite books during a week-long event celebrating reading earlier this month. All week, special guests from the community have read to the children. In addition, students were encouraged to do book reports which are placed on the wall to increase the size of a book worm.
